"To What Extent Was The Great Depression Responsible For The Collapse Of The Weimar Republic?"
Introduction:
It would be far too simplistic to argue that the Great Depression was solely responsible for the fall of the Weimar republic, instead the depression provided the circumstances that made possible the collapse of democracy in Germany. The depression played an important role in the collapse of the republic, as it had a significant economic, political and psychological impact on Germany, and without it, it is palpable that the political fate of the Weimar republic would have been less disastrous. The depression produced an economic crisis which resulted in a political crisis, and this provided opportunities for groups and individuals, such as the conservative elites and Nazis, to pursue actions which had the effect of destroying democracy in Germany.
