hey guys, i tried out for selective schools and did the test this year but didn't get in..
im trying out for john monash next year and i was wondering if y'all got some tips for the exam or the interview or anything about JMSS that might help me. thanks!!

angxl so the exam is super easy - mostly just revise your school textbook and do a few practice tests, but mainly i would focus on the interview, so just try and accumulate as many extracurricular and scientific pursuits that may help you on it

angxl my advice is timing. do the science icas papers, a lot of people shared some resources in various folder. and for maths, its basically sehs but year 9/10levels, so it will include parabolas, trig, and those kinda stuff for maths. just try to find hard math questions and answer them. but time yourself! thats the main thing!!

You need to have a passion for science. If you don't yet - develop one through the journey.
That's the only thing that can make you pass the interview and test.

Just do hendersons 3-6 months before and light science revision.

Realistically, If your not the type of person JMSS wants, no type and amount of practice will get you in.

angxl I’d really recommend Aimer tutoring if you’re looking at tutoring for jmss. Their online sessions are personal because the tutors actually check in to see what you need help with. Something I found really good was their lesson content and practice tests, which are way more accurate to the real exam. Unlike JAC or Hendersons, which are mostly just knowledge recall, Aimer focuses on the actual problem-solving type of stuff you see in the test. stephqnii hmm theyre are a lot of programming opportunities related to stem u could check out, also u can just search up "science related opportunities" and a lot come up - mostly your participation matters but if you win thats just an added bonus

stephqnii There's stuff like the big science competition and JSO. Like what the person said above, there's some coding stuff, like coding competitions by the amt. There's some maths comps as well by amt and two by uni melb

sarvvyy_ I agree with you about needing a passion for science. No amount of practice can get you past the interview part which heavily tests your passion for STEM and whether you genuinely enjoy it. However, I believe the test does require a degree of academic performance that you can’t achieve solely through passion alone (eg, the intense timing of maths or the writing skills needed for science). I’d strongly recommend against going to hendersons or jac though, literal waste of money because they don’t actually test you on the right content and they’re just overpriced 🤷‍♂️

Ballsaxk yes bro idk abt tutoring but they have gun mocks for both test and interview (like being deadass they pretty much guessed our group interview activity).

Ballsaxk Yeah, I agree with you on the test part. Although highly priced - hendersons is the most accurate for both selective and john monash. Personally, I didn't do hendersons but I did do the ones available online a month before - please do not pay 6000 for hendersons just for one or two tests 😭 .

You gotta be academically capable (not the best nor the worst) and have a passion for science I'd say.
