Melbourne High Year 10 Entry Acceleration

Hi guys, I recently got admission into year 10 entry at Melbourne High, and have been wondering whether we would be given the same opportunity as the year 9 entry students to accelerate in a given subject. I specifically want to accelerate in units 3/4 biology in grade 11, so if any past grade 10 entry students or others could give me information about how acceleration works for grade 10 entry, that would be great.

Hi bro,
I missed out on Melbourne High in year 9 entry and really wanted to get in this year.
I dont know what extracurriculars to put on my application form and to do from now up until the application is due, as I know that your co-curriculars are a major part of the application process.
What did you put down in that respect and any other info would be amazing.

MELBHIGHYR10 Hey, I would just start making a list of all the extra curriculars and achievements you have/participate in (both in academics and outside academics), so you have a rough idea of which ones you would like to write on your application. As for now, I would highly recommend applying for a leadership role for next year (assuming you are in grade 8). Also, for this entry, the school is looking for overall excellence, so if you play an instrument (even if you don't you could start now) it would help, as well as participating in any sporting activities outside of school. In my application, I included that I played state basketball last year, have completed a diploma in swimming, and also passed a few AMEB exams. Overall, in your application, you just have to hint that you have other achievements outside academics, no matter how big or small, also linking these achievements with the school values/facilities. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

ₐₙₒₙᵧₘₒᵤₛ uhh im pretty sure its usually refers to a Diploma of Sport, Aquatics and Recreation Management (SIS50122), which prepares you for leadership roles in the aquatics industry, or a Diploma of Sport (Swimming Coaching) (SIS50319), which focuses on developing swimming coaching skills.

If I completed these goals, do you think I would have a shot, and if not, what do you think I would need to improve on. For context, I have applied for cadets, as I know it’s an integral part of MHS’s culture, and I already am really great at running even without any training, so I think getting close to the aus record is feasible for me. Also hype amplify is a youth board which plans community events in my area.

Also, could you say your extra-curriculars and curriculars which you think helped you to gain entry.
One last thing, thank you for taking the time to reply to stuff like this bro, especially as you already achieved acceptance and don’t have to do this. This means a lot bro, as I can’t imagine staying at my current school for the next four years.

Thats a really good list youve created, and I think with those extra curriculars you would have an increased shot on getting in. But I would recommend also focusing thoroughly on the assessment components of the exam, as I think they only call kids who have got 3 to 5 superiors for the interview, unless you have an outstanding application. In my application, I wrote about my sporting achievements, musical achievements, leadership roles and academic achievements whilst also tying those with the school. Also, for running, what do you mean about getting close to the aus record. Do you do running at a state level or just interschool?

Hey bro, right now I’m just focussing on athletics, cadets, cross country, public speaking, leadership roles in my school and community, cadets (as mhs values this highly), and debating. If you are strong in performing arts or music you can do that instead of sports. Good luck on your preparation.

Yeah, even now, each day I try to put in a good few hours on maths and numerical reasoning, as that’s what mainly let me down this year, and I’ll incorporate english, verbal, and writing in at the last few months before the select entry test/

In response to your question, I do running at a interschool level, but my school isn’t in SSV and doesn’t offer a route to state but is in ACS which is a seperate competition. I googled the Australian record U/15 times for the event that I’m strongest in(800m), and my time is just ten seconds off the record, even with no training. Do you think with this list and 3-5 superiors I would have a serious shot at the interview stage or do you think I would need to incorporate the performing arts or music in there somewhere, or maybe add something else in.

I can’t judge you on your chance of getting in since I don’t know what achievements your competitors have got, but I reckon the list is pretty good. I think you should also apply for a leadership role in school next year and involve yourself in all the co curricular at your current school.
