mita ! Hi! I sat the exam in 2024, so there may be some changes in the exam (esp. for maths/writing I heard) from when I took it. I'll give some tips + what I did to prep for the English sections (reading comp/verbal reasoning/writing):
- MAX OUT YOUR TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS: do timed practice tests - lots of mock tests floating around, so you can get a feel for how long you spend per question (I did some on NotesEdu but I don't think they really helped me...) Remember: each multiple-choice question is worth the same, so if you find a hard one, skip it BUT remember to come back to it if you have time.
- READ: + think about what you read. Helps to take notes of words you don't know + context sentence to expand vocabulary, also consider literary techniques and how they help to create meaning. For reading comprehension there were narrative excerpts, newspaper reports, persuasive/opinion pieces, cartoons/images, etc. so try to read a broad range of materials. I personally practiced with a SAT textbook. Also: quirky short stories (I love horror!) help sooo much for the creative writing section, especially for inspo into how to structure the narrative (e.g. circular structure).
- PRACTISE WRITING: like I mentioned before - timed practice tests. Time yourself writing to random prompts (AI helps, or NAPLAN workbooks) in roughly 20 minutes. Handwrite!
That's basically it from me, I don't really remember the maths components, maybe try practising AMC questions? Not too sure about that π
Also: Regarding tutoring for SEHS exam - I heard big classes like Edukingdom or JAC are good for just immersing yourself in a whole range of similar questions + experience with mock exams (personally didn't take any tutoring). HOWEVER these big tutoring companies seem to fall short with the writing section, so I would recommend doing some 1:1 tuition with someone who has taken the exam previously to work on your writing, and making the most of online free resources >> spending lots of money on big group classes (as I said before, this is my personal opinion, if I could go back and redo my prep. Some people may have benefited from these tuition options, so perhaps the best thing is to try it for yourself)
Good luck! π
