JMSS Interview Guide
The JMSS interview is only around 10 minutes, so it goes by pretty quickly. By this stage, they've already seen your entrance test results and your CV, so the interview isn't about proving how smart you are. It's about showing them who you are, what you're interested in, and whether you'll make the most of the opportunities at JMSS.
The biggest thing is to be confident. You don't need to know the answer to every question, and nobody expects you to. If you're asked something difficult, take a few seconds to think, explain your reasoning, and answer as best as you can. It's much better to think your way through a question than to panic or try to bluff your way through it.
You should also try to show genuine passion throughout the interview. If you're talking about an achievement, explain why it meant something to you. If you're talking about science, maths, or one of your hobbies, let your interest come across naturally. Interviewers can usually tell the difference between someone who's genuinely excited and someone who's just saying what they think they want to hear.
Before your interview, make sure you're familiar with everything on your CV. If you've listed an award, competition or activity, be prepared to talk about it confidently. Think about what you learned, why you're proud of it, and how it reflects your interests. You should also spend some time reading about JMSS so you can talk about specific programs, electives or opportunities that genuinely appeal to you. Avoid generic answers like "it's a good school" show that you've actually looked into what makes JMSS different.
One thing that helps is keeping your answers clear and specific. You don't need to give a two-minute response to every question. Answer the question directly, use an example if it's relevant, and avoid going off on long tangents. A short, thoughtful answer is usually much stronger than a long one that doesn't really go anywhere.
Finally, make sure you have a question prepared for the end of the interview. Almost everyone gets asked if they have any questions, and asking something thoughtful shows that you've done your research and are genuinely interested in the school.

- Why do you want to attend JMSS?
- Tell me about yourself.
- What achievement are you most proud of?
- What are your strengths?
- What are your weaknesses, and how are you improving them?
- What do you enjoy doing outside of school?
- What area of science interests you the most, and why?
- What's a recent scientific discovery or invention that you find interesting?
- What do you want to do after high school?
- How do you balance school with your extracurricular activities?
- What will you miss about your old school?
- Do you have any questions for us?
Most importantly, remember that the interview isn't designed to catch you out. They're looking for students who are curious, willing to learn, and genuinely excited about science and mathematics. If you stay calm + speak confidently, and let your enthusiasm show, you'll already be leaving a good impression.
