Hello,
Im currently in year 10 picking my VCE subjects for next year and year 12. Im thinking of doing a Commerce degree. What subjects would help me build a knowledge foundation for this degree?

To fulfil prerequisites for the most unis (particularly if you’re interested in Monash or Melbourne commerce courses):

    • pick at least one English subject e.g. English (mainstream), English Language, Literature (this is required to get an ATAR anyway)
    • a maths subject, especially Methods if you’re interested in Monash or Melbourne Commerce. (You can also do Spesh if you want to)

After this, it’s just whatever subjects you’re interested in (this is what you should be basing it on), and as a last resort, whatever you’re “good at”.

Seeing as you would like to study commerce, you might find these interesting (and often these are subject bonuses for commerce courses):

    • Accounting
    • Business Management
    • Economics

Hope that helps! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Thank you so much! I am considering accounting, I did economics unit 1 as a VCE subject in year 10 and i didnt really like it so im thinking if i want to do something with economics maybe i should study it in uni rather than school?

Also, im considering history and philosophy, would they help as well or not really?

Apologies, I think this post might’ve been accidentally removed.

Depends on the course. Some things are better learnt at high school, others at uni; it just depends on the person themselves.

If these are subjects you like, go for it! You can still change subjects during Year 11. In terms of relevance to commerce courses, I’ve never done commerce at uni before so can’t tell you from personal experience, but the handbooks might be helpful here.

Whether you want to study something economics related in high school is up to you.
Accounting, Business Management and/or Economics may help build knowledge in the commerce field, but it's certainly possible to learn the key skills whilst in uni!
(You might like to gain some insight from someone who has done/is doing a commerce degree - possibly close to you, or on the forum).

As for History and Philosophy, I'm not sure if they'd be of much help towards learning commerce, but pick them if you enjoy those studies! 🙂
