Should I do VCE Algorithmics without prior knowledge of coding?

Hi everyone,
I'm wondering whether I should do VCE Algorithmics next year, I'll be in year 12. I'm doing Maths Methods and Specialist Maths this year and I will continue these subjects next year. I'm confident in my maths abilities and I have done pretty well on the SACs for these subjects so far this year. Unfortunately, I haven't done any coding before but I do really enjoy problem solving.
I'm also doing Physics, PE 3&4, and English this year if that's any help. I also did Further Maths last year and got a 43 whether that helps.
If you do recommend that I have a go at Algorithmics, what should I do to prepare for it? Should I learn more about coding over the summer? Do you have resources that you recommend to use?

Prior coding knowledge is definitely not required to do VCE Algorithmics as you should be taught whichever language is used in the course and much of it is theory anyway. It sounds like Algorithmics would suit you well. Are you looking to do the subject via VSV or your school and do you know what language will be used where you would take it?

Algorithmics will only include pseudocode (to my knowledge) which is being covered in specialist maths at our school. Prior coding and algorithm knowledge will give minimal assistance but it's better than nothing.

Hi @katemt129, I did quite well on Algorithmics (I had some limited prior coding knowledge), and have been tutoring many students since so I feel I can answer this question with some authority.

In short, it definitely helps. The hardest thing about the subject is the different way of thinking that you need to understand how to write pseudocode. My best advice would be to do many different programming questions. Most schools require you to code in python, while some require you to code in edgy for your assignments. Either way though, the exam will only have pseudocode (a sort of English-like code with less rules). A lot of students get stuck on coding, so I would recommend getting a head start on those sorts of problems early. You don't need to have coding knowledge coming in, but it would be foolish to start the subject thinking that you will pick it up in the first few weeks, as for many schools, the focus is on things like abstract data types rather than giving the students the ability to code.
