what language are you learning? what methods are you using to learn? why did you choose that language and what's keeping you motivated?

me:
i learned French in years 7-10 at school and recently decided to start relearning it on Duolingo. I tried learning Spanish on Duolingo during lockdown but now when I go on Duolingo i'm more tempted to go back to the language I know more vocab for.

I learned Japanese during primary school and then highschool years 7-10 but only done a little bit since. Currently i am learning German using duolingo!

Currently learning French as apart of my major at uni. Hoping to do another one as i'm enjoying it so much.
I've always wanted to speak a second language, and knowing how large the francephone world is, I thought it was the perfect lanuage to pick up. Plus it complements my science major for where I want to work.

Motivation is really the deadlines of my assesments for me, but when you can finally understand the spoken language you are learning, that is really motivating. It feels like you are unlocking a whole new world.

I've been learning Japanese on and off this year (as a good weeb should). It's similar enough to my native language (Chinese) in writing but still different enough to be intellectually stimulating. The onyomi is more similar to Cantonese than Mandarin when pronounced. I did French in high school but an abusive teacher ruined it all for me in years 10-12 so despite liking French culture quite a lot I don't want to relive the trauma

When I was like 5, I had this v-tech laptop, and I got soooo bored of learning English, I put in on the Spanish setting and picked up Spanish quite quickly. 13 years later, the only thing I remember how to say is good night. I used to learn Japanese in primary school and 7-9, but after that lowkey let go of it haha. I can still count in Japanese which is pretty cool. Been trying to pick up Hindi, so I can understand my North Indian friends lol. My native language is from south India so its quite interesting seeing the differences and similarities of the languages. I use duolingo and do it whenever I have the time.

I'm currently doing VCE Japanese and I started it in Year 7, I found that I picked it up very quickly and enjoyed the feeling of acquiring such knowledge. I thought Japanese would be one of my worst subjects despite foreign languages in general being one of the things I learned easiest, but it didn't end up that way. In years 8&9 I studied very hard and found it motivating to learn so much, I had a schedule and studied every single day. I've been burned out for a year now, and I've studied maybe twice very lightly since and infrequently doing my Anki. It's a shame, because I do love learning about it.

Vietnamese has been my latest language addition, but placed on the back burner for now. So far, my partner and YouTube have been my only sources but would like to ramp it up when time permits.

I’ve also been meaning to revisit the other previously learnt languages, especially my heritage language.

I learnt Mandarin Chinese from year 5-10 and my brother continued it through year 12 and uni but personally I have been on and off learning Latin since year 7. Could I have picked a nondead language? Probably. Does it help for understanding other languages that used it as a basis? Most definitely
