Can you guys help me with speech ideas? I’m trying not to be cliché and need some humour too 🙂

    Emmy

    Hey Emmy,

When you're doing a speech, the most important thing is to have a theme or an object of interest. When you have a theme and/or object of interest, you not only engage the audience from the get go but you can refer back to it right at the end of the speech which makes it memorable and super interesting. For example, if you take a look on the internet, I saw one with a Rubix cube. Maybe a chess piece, a boat, your school logo, a pencil, a piece of paper. And then at the end, refer back to it and it leaves a lasting impact on the audience.

In terms of humour, you don't want to overdo it; just sprinkle maybe around 3 in the whole speech and if you want, just search up a few jokes. Also, don't force it into the speech, ensure it flows well with the rest.

Hope that helps. Feel free to ask any more questions.

      PhytoPlankton thanks, this is helpful.

This is what I have so far for my speech, for context it only has to be about two minutes long, and this is an early draft.

      Emmy’s School Captain Speech

      • Today, I have the amazing opportunity to speak to a room full of extraordinary people (unsure about this opening 😬)
      • Why would I make a good number one representative? Because I care, because I want to hear what you have to say. The students are the most important part of any school. Developing our school relies on supporting the students, and I’d love to be your voice. I am simply the postman of your concerns and opinions, and I believe I can listen to what you have to say, good, bad, or ugly.
      • Our school is constantly adapting to fit the next generation of students, with new priorities and hopes and dreams. I’m confident I can represent this new generation of students and do my best to help each student reach their potential
      • I’d like to think that rather than just a leader, I’d be a team player, working with you guys and your teachers to make our school the school we want it to be.
      • Whatever challenges or changes our school faces, I’m prepared to work through, and help everybody achieve ‘victory through effort’ as our school tops say.
      • If you take anything from my speech today, I’d like you to consider the question, ‘how can I help?’ What can I do to make school a better place to be? New trackies? Less Shakespeare? While I can’t promise these things, I can promise to have an open mind, but not an empty head, and do what I can.
      • It would be an honour to represent Traf High, and I hope you’ve at least gotten a smile from the interesting memes everyone’s stuck up, and the cookies I handed out last Friday to those who were lucky enough to grab one.
      • Vote 1 Emmy, Have an excellent day, and all the best for the rest of the year.
