Hi everyone, I thought I'd make separate thread just for Nossal students so we don't bombard the other Victorian Selective Entry thread. I was just wondering if anyone has received anything from Nossal after they sent out the enrolment email. Orientation day is in two and a half weeks and they said they would send out information about electives this month. Just wondering in case I didn't enroll properly or something.

Ommahp Hey!!! I'm also going to Nossal next year and I also haven't heard anything about enrolment. I've also heard other kids at my school who are going to NHS also asking the same question, I'm pretty sure no ones been told anything yet. In addition, if you see on the NHS website you are able to see that they haven't uploaded the choice subjects for year 9 yet either

Thanks for replying! It's reassuring to know that everyone hasn't received anything as well. My friend said that the school emailed him when he didn't enroll properly so they've probably read through everyone's enrolment forms. Hopefully they'll send out more information this week since orientation day is coming up.

I think I'll do photography and music since I like both of those. And visual communication design will probably be my back up. The electives are kind of plain to be honest and I find it weird that there are 4 art based electives and 3 drama/music based electives. Also, food studies is crazy expensive, I didn't expect it to be $245. It's also kind of funny how the cover of the handbook says Year 9 Electives 2023 but the title of the first page says 2022.

Also where on the Nossal website did you find the electives pdf? Maybe I'm blind but I can't find it. I don't need to find it because I used your link but I have the urge to figure out where it is.

Ommahp I found it underneath the year 9 2023 enrolment documentation thing which you click on after clicking on enrolment information haha

It says on the Nossal booklist that the language workbook have to be bought new but like, surely I can just rub out the work out of my French workbook. I already used it a bit this year since I do VSL French and I really don't want to spend another $40 on a new book when I have a half used one. Do you guys think it'll be fine? Because it's not like I'm buying a second hand book that already has answers written in, like it's my own work and it's stuff that I've already learnt.

monket I don't really like any of the options either but probably either music and food studies or music and photography. Back up will probably be the one I don't choose out of those three.

Ommahp It probably will be fine, if you are unsure you could ask the school on orientation 🙂

I have a question, I've been doing Japanese self study for a few months now but I originally wrote on the enrolment to do Japanese beginner... I'm now worried that I might be too advanced for beginner but not enough for intermediate 😭Should I go tell Nossal that-

            monket
            Hi, Monket!
At Nossal, they'll usually give a start of year exam and check that the whole class is on board with beginners or intermediate (or at least that's what happened to us last year). I think that both classes are pretty similar, its just that intermediate means already knowing all hiragana and revising katakana i think. Most intermediate people have done japanese for a few years, but some have little to no experience at all. Overall, don't worry too much!

Yolk15 Thank you!! If they are revising katakana then I might need to be in intermediate then 😅

              Yolk15
Do you know if the French classes have the start of year exam too or is it just for Japanese? And if you put your preferences for intermediate, can you be moved to the beginner class if your start of year exam scores aren't on par with the rest of the class?

Yolk15 What topics do they cover on the start of year exam for the intermediate Japanese? Just so that I can see if I am up to par with what they expect 🙂

                  Ommahp
I assume they would. You can't really move to another language class, because the classes are based on what house you are. So, 2 houses in Jap beginner, and 2 houses in Jap intermediate. If the majority of your class is beginner, you do beginner as well i think.

                  Randomhuman24
So I did intermediate, but I honestly don't remember much. Its not actually a big exam, just a short test to let the teachers know what you know. It will probably be reading, writing, a hiragana table, and vocab translation. I can say, however, that when I did term 1 last year, we covered vocab (family, daily routines, time), short conversations (how are you, etc.), and particles.

Don't worry too much about year 9 languages, because it is not compulsory going into year 10, and onwards into VCE.

                    Randomhuman24
I don't remember if it's on the test, but you do learn/revise katakana throughout the semester (using the included exercise books on the booklist).

                    ~ndha~
I'm pretty sure we can only pick two electives, one for each semester.

                    Hi all,
Should I call the school to get help in this situation? I got put into Japanese Beginner, but that wasn’t in my preferences. I put Japanese (intermediate) as my first preference, and French beginner as my second, so I am unsure how this could have happened.
Has anybody faced an issue like this as well?

                      monket
I'm in Garuda doing Beginner Japanese. I really wanted to do Intermediate French but Japanese is fine. I'm in tute class 0A3 and teaching class 2. Both of which my friend isn't in but he's doing Beginner Japanese too so hopefully we have some class together. Also what electives are you going to choose since the two I wanted to do are in the same semester.

Ommahp I'm also doing beginner Japanese and my tute is 0N2 and teaching class is 6 🙂 The electives I'm going for in Semester 1 are art, food studies and then creative design (really don't want creative design but the others are worse in my opinion haha) and then semester 2 would be photography, theatre studies and then visual communications. All I know is that I really don't want electronics and then I'm okay 😄

                          monket
Yeah I really don't want to do electronics either. I'll probably end up doing food studies, art and creative design for semester one even though I don't really like the options. Semester two I'll do music, photography or viscom. I wish that photography and music were in different semesters since those are the only two I want to do but I guess its fine.

monket I'm in Garuda doing beginner Japanese as well, tute class 0A4 I think...? and teaching class 1.

monket I have a feeling elec will be pretty popular so as long as you didn't fill elec as your first choice I don't think you'll get it as an elective

~ndha~ I'm not exactly a music person haha, in year 7 at my school the program that I was in forced us all to play an instrument and join band and I think I'm permanently scarred 😅

                          Orientation is so soon now!!!!

Hey guys, a fellow year 10 from nossal. I was just wondering how orientation day went for y’all ?
(Did they give everyone these little sandwiches with like the tiniest slice of ham lmao)

justaperson_ Orientation day was pretty good, I really enjoyed it! They gave us donuts, fruit, juice boxes and varied burgers for morning tea and lunch, all of which was delicious (well I was also really hungry, so I’d eat anything at that point). I don’t know what book to choose for English though, any recommendations? I was thinking either Jane Eyre or Frankenstein.

Randomhuman24 I was thinking Frankenstein, honestly that head of English somewhat turned me off Jane Eyre by how intense she was about it

Oh haha yeah Dr Schroor… good luck with her … but anyways I’m glad to hear it was a good day for you all. I think Frankenstein was the most popular in my class and apparently had a pretty simple plot. I would recommend Frankenstein as it’s a very ‘quotable book’ (as in, you’ll need to memorise a lot of quotes for certain assessments and Frankenstein has these rlly good short and versatile quotes). I didn’t choose or read Jane Eyre so I have no idea haha. Btw what houses are u guys in?

justaperson_ Ahh okay, I think I’ll go with Frankenstein then. As for assessments at Nossal, what are they like? Are they tests or essays or something else? I’m in Pegasus house by the way

Randomhuman24 ohh nice ur in pegasus too (welcome haha). Just curious, what tute are you in (don’t have to answer if you don’t wanna). Uhhh in terms of tests, they are surprisingly really standard and at a pretty decent level. For example, in math you can choose to do a standard or advanced side for the test. English works differently where you get to kinda ‘choose ur assignments’ (you’ll learn more about it later). Then the other subjects are your stock standard test like any other school. We just did our exams and ngl they weren’t that hard compared to what I thought it would be. But ig that’s subjective huh. Anyways good luck 👍
