I was a big fan of reading high-scoring responses in Year 12, for 2 reasons:
⏳⏳SAVE HOURS OF STUDYING⏳⏳
In Year 12, time and efficiency is everything. Through such a difficult year, it is so important to find time to relax and take a break. With better resources at your disposal, you can easily improve the efficiency of your studying and minimise the time you spend at your desk.
Imagine those extraneous hours you might usually spend collecting your thoughts as you try to piece evidence together, or sifting through your thick texts to find quotes to use in your writing. Those hours spent can easily be reduced to minutes by reading essays that have essentially done the work for you—compiling evidence together in a comprehensive and expressive manner with the quotes weaved in to boot.
Again, time and efficiency is everything. Master these two things and you can study less for the same results, and leave time for the more important things—your friends and family, your mental health and making the most out of your last year in high school!
📈📈FAST-TRACKS YOUR IMPROVEMENT 📈📈
A saying goes that “you are the average of your 5 friends”, and a similar mindset can be applied to studying. By actively exposing yourself to high-quality writing and insightful analysis, you’ll subconsciously pick up manners of writing and use evidence that will boost the quality of your own essays.
When I read other peoples’ essays, I’d often pick up on sentences I liked and replicate them in my own writing—you can do the same.
Furthermore, the more high-scoring essays I read, the more I began to understand my texts. A deeper understanding of your texts leads to more insightful analysis, and that only leads to better writing. Sometimes, I would question the arguments put forward by a high-scoring response and form my own opinions, and that would further lead me to write in a manner that would fast-track my results from a B+ average in Year 11 to a 99% final SAC average at the end of Year 12.
By reading high-scoring essays, you automatically pick up on writing mannerisms and evidence that only help you improve at English and achieve the study scores that you desire.
