Hi! I'm going into year 12 this year and would like to know how to study for algo 3/4 if I am aiming to get a 40+ raw ss.

For the ex-Algo 3/4 students, if you were given the opportunity to redo the subject is there anything you would've done differently? and what would you do the same?

I would also like to know what I can start doing to do better in class and in SACs (eg. do a certain number of algorithmic puzzles every week, pre-learn before going to class). I am really lucky to have the subject taught at school rather than doing it remotely like a lot of schools. I also have 2 years of coding experience with python where I made some small projects.

How long prior should I start SAC prep and how should I prep for them? I've seen a friend who did Algo and they would complain about having a test every 2-3 weeks, is it a very stressful subject? I'm not sure how stressful it is and might think about dropping it (actually that might not be much of an option as I'm not rlly good at any others so I will have to suck it up and put in the effort) because my other subjects also take a while to study for. Just so I can get a jist of it, is it possible to relatively compare the difficulty of the subject? (is it like spesh? methods? phys? chem?)

Currently, my plan is to put in more of my effort into 3 subjects and get 40+=ss on them (SM, Phys, and Algo), mid-high 30s on Chem and (expect) a low 30s in Eng (cuz I'm so bad at English that it's actually painful).

[Please feel free to give me tips on how to study for my other subjects as well if you would like to!]

Edit:

My current subjects (goals):
Eng 3/4 (prolly like a 30-34)
Phys 3/4 (hopefully 40+)
Chem 3/4 (surely 35-37 is not too hard?)
Spesh 3/4 (hmm rlly hope 40+)
Algo 3/4 (hoping for a 40+)
Methods 3/4 (2022)

Hi @crumblycupcakes, I took Algorithmics a few years ago and got a scaled 46, and I've been tutoring many students since then.

The reason why so many students struggle with Algorithmics is because it is an entirely different way of thinking to what the average student is used to. The best advice I can give is to get better at doing coding like questions. I had some coding experience going in like you, but even so it was very useful. Some SACs in Algo are project based (SATs) but there are definitely tests as well. Not all of these have to do with programming, as the unit also focusses on the history of computing. I very much enjoyed the subject, but I know a lot of people found it a challenge. For relative difficulty, I would say it is harder than methods.

If you're interested, I've also started offering group classes in addition to individual one on one classes in algo, the details of which can be found here: https://discussion.atarnotes.com/d/7993-algorithmics-tutoring

Best of luck with your studies!
