Writing straight into workbooks or doing it on seperate paper?

For books like Excel and ATARnotes topic tests, would it be better to write straight into the book or do it on separate pieces of paper? Sometimes the books are way too thick and hard to write on, and if I write straight into the book I can't reattempt the questions.
