I was planning on initially taking 6 subjects for VCE but I ended up dropping a subject in year 12 because I felt like I wouldn't be able to cope well doing the 5 that year (I did a year 12 subject early). Taking an early subject and doing 5 in total was the best decision ever. I still enjoyed taking the subject I dropped when I did it in year 11, but I'm glad I did 5 in the end. Doing 4 subjects during year 12 was so much easier for me to handle. I got a 95+ ATAR with only 5 subjects, so it's absolutely possible to get an 85 ATAR. No matter how many subjects you do, you're going to have to work hard. However, don't push yourself too hard. Your wellbeing is more important! Trust me from experience! If doing 5 subjects feels right for you, then go for it. For me, it was absolutely the best decision I could have made. Some people will do 6 because that's what will work best for them. It doesn't matter. Doing 5 subjects doesn't hinder your ability to perform well, and in a way, it can help you perform better in your subjects because you have less to juggle. In short, don't just follow what everyone else is doing. Do what's best for you and follow your gut.
