Hi all, I was looking for some advice for ATAR maths. I’m in year 12 and am doing 5 ATARs, including methods.
I’m conflicted whether I stay in methods or drop to applications.
Methods isn’t a pre-req for any Uni courses I’m currently interested in, and am struggling with the work load of 5 ATARs.
I finished on a 68 in methods last year, but I had a really good teacher. Unfortunately, I don’t have a great teacher this year.
I don’t enjoy studying for maths in general, I never really have, and will always prefer to study for my other subjects before studying for methods. But I know I’ll have to study if I stay in methods 😭
I guess I’m looking for advice for anyone who also dropped from methods to applications and whether they think it was worth the switch.
I’m aiming for a 85-90 ATAR, but don’t know whether this is going to be easier in methods or applications.
I struggle with investigations / applying knowledge, so I’m scared I’ll fail Units 3/4
Thanks 😁

Mills changed the title to Maths methods advice .

if it’s not a prequisite that you need (which you said) and you feel like you don’t need the 10% boost provided for methods in order to obtain that 85-90 ATAR then I would suggest making the switch to apps (as since u said you don’t like studying for maths in general, rigorous courses like methods might cause unnecessary stress).

I have never done apps (methods and spec kid) but I know people who transitioned into apps and instantly became rank 1-5 after scraping by in the bottom for methods.

As long as you are willing to apply yourself in catching up and learning content you should be fine in apps

Hope this helps.

Yes I too think that if it's not a prerequisite, it's probably better to drop to applications.

Also, methods get scaled down awfully if you don't get like 94%+ (In WA anyways). One of my friends got 87% in the Methods exam, and she got scaled down by 13! I know application also gets scaled down badly if you don't get realllly high, but if you think you have a better chance at getting high 90s in applications than methods, I would say do apps.

Hope it helps 🙂
