Wondering how many VCE subjects need to be completed in years 11 and 12? Is it 4, 5, 6?

I understand the subjects are broken up into 4 units and 1 unit is equivalent to a semester but I'm having a bit of confusion around the number of VCE subjects that are required to be studied.

The minimum amount of VCE subjects that have to be studied is 4 (including English). However, 6 subjects (including English) can contribute to your ATAR. Most people do 5 subjects (English + 4 other subjects) but people like me do 6 subjects, so 1 subject a year earlier to get an extra 10% on their ATAR.

Just wanted to clarify Lemonade_222 ‘s response: The minimum is 4 full subjects’ (U1-4) worth i.e. 16 units with an S result in each. If you’re aiming for the highest ATAR possible, which is many people’s end goal (particularly those intending on studying a highly competitive course e.g. medicine in uni), do 6 in total across your VCE years to maximise the ATAR you can achieve, because a total of 6 will count. You can do more if the school permits to “knock out” your worse scores too, but it’s not a common tactic these days. But of course, this would vary with the person and what they are able to handle (someone who has a chronic illness, for example, may only be able to handle 4).

So this is an individual question and occasionally your school may have additional rules (e.g. if you are the “typical” student, you may be highly recommended to study 6 across your VCE years to ensure you get the best results you can personally).
