Welcome to the John Monash Science School Year 11 Entrance Guide! This guide is designed to help you, as a prospective Year 11 student, prepare for the admission process at John Monash Science School (JMSS). As the writer of this guide, I am honored to have secured a place for Year 11 at John Monash Science School for the Class of 2025. I hope that my experiences can provide valuable insights to prospective applicants.

Please note that this guide is specifically for Year 10 students applying for Year 11. If you are a Year 9 student seeking admission to Year 10, please seek information elsewhere.

Demographics

Annually, over 400 students sit for the entrance exam, vying for a spot in the Year 11 cohort. Only about 80 make it to the interview stage, and approximately 30-40 students are offered a place. This highly competitive process underscores the exceptional talent and commitment to science among JMSS applicants. The resulting diversity within the Year 11 class enriches the learning experience, fostering an environment of academic excellence and collaboration.

Admission Process Overview

The admission process at JMSS consists of two main components: the entrance exam and the interview. In this guide, we will focus on the entrance exam, which is administered by EduTest. The exam is divided into several sections, each designed to assess your skills and knowledge in various areas.

Location : John Monash Science School On Site

Entrance Exam Sections:

1. Science Reasoning

Description: The Science Reasoning section evaluates your ability to think scientifically. It involves interpreting graphs and data, similar to what you have encountered in Year 9-10 Science. Reviewing your Science textbooks and practicing data interpretation will be extremely helpful for this section.

2. Numerical Reasoning

Description: Numerical Reasoning assesses your mathematical skills. Expect questions on number patterns, worded problems, and more. It's essential to be proficient in mathematical concepts, including those you've learned in Year 6-10 Mathematics.

Note: Many applicants struggle with time management in the Mathematics section, so it's crucial to practice solving problems efficiently.

3. Mathematics

Description: This section covers a wide range of mathematical topics, including quadratics, worded problems, and more. Ensure you have a strong grasp of Year 6-10 Mathematics concepts to perform well in this section.

Tip: Time management is critical here as well, so practice solving math problems under timed conditions.

4. Science Knowledge

Description: Science Knowledge goes beyond Science Reasoning and requires a deeper understanding of scientific concepts. You'll be given less information, and you'll need to draw upon your prior knowledge. Expect questions like identifying the Krebs cycle and more advanced science topics.

5. Writing Piece

Description: In this section, you will be given a prompt to write either a Science Report or a Science Analysis. This task assesses your English skills and your ability to convey scientific information effectively. The prompt will guide you in demonstrating your reporting abilities and science comprehension.

Tip: Pay attention to the prompt and structure your writing coherently.

Interview Overview

The interview is the second phase of the admission process, typically conducted for the top 80 students who have excelled in the entrance exam. It plays a vital role in assessing your suitability for JMSS. Here's what you can expect:

Location: The interviews are held in the GO Multipurpose room on the ground floor at JMSS.

Duration: Each interviewee is allocated a 15-minute time slot.

The Interview Process

Survey: Before the interview, you will be required to fill out a survey. This survey serves as an important part of your interview, so take it seriously. You will be asked to provide information about your reasons for wanting to join JMSS, your thoughts on your current school, your extracurricular activities, and your intended VCE subjects for next year.
Tip: Be honest and thoughtful in your responses, as the interviewers will carefully review your survey.

Waiting Zone: After completing the survey, you will be directed to a waiting zone. While waiting for your turn, use this time to socialize and engage with other applicants. Keep in mind that someone may be observing your interactions.
Tip: Be friendly, approachable, and respectful to everyone you encounter.

The Interview: The interview itself will be conducted by a panel of two interviewers. They will ask you a series of questions, typically 5-6, to assess your suitability for JMSS. The questions may vary from year to year but could include:

  • Why do you want to join JMSS, especially at Year 11?

  • What does your average weekend look like?

  • What are your strengths and weaknesses as reflected in your reports?

  • What is your favorite scientific invention?
    and more.

Tip: Prepare thoughtful answers in advance, drawing from your personal experiences and interests.

Confidence is Key: During the interview, confidence in your responses is essential. Maintain eye contact, speak clearly, and convey your passion for science and JMSS. Remember that the interviewers are interested in understanding your motivations and your potential contributions to the JMSS community.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the journey to secure a place at John Monash Science School for Year 11 is a challenging but rewarding endeavor. Success begins with meticulous preparation for the entrance exam, where a solid foundation in science and mathematics is essential. In the interview, genuine passion for science and thoughtful responses play a crucial role in demonstrating your fit for JMSS. Remember, every step counts, from excelling in the exam to confidently articulating your aspirations during the interview. With dedication, sincerity, and a commitment to your academic pursuits, you can pave the way to becoming a valuable member of the JMSS community. Good luck on your path to joining Victoria's first specialist science school!

For resources I recommend doing ICAS tests to brush up your science and science reasoning. The science writing can be in any topic, so I recommend watching YouTube videos related to science in your spare time to make sure you know that topic. Regarding Numerical Reasoning and Mathematics, you can find quite a few similar questions in Cambridge Year 10 & 10A textbook and the Cambridge Methods Unit 1 & 2 Textbook.

Hi polskaa, I am currently in Year 10 and have been offered an interview for year 11 entry into JMSS. I am really confused on what to prepare for, as everyone I know had gotten in through year 10 admission. It would be really great if you could help me! I have added you on discord, my username is haasini190335.

I had a question and I would be very grateful if someone with experience could answer. If someone is granted Year 11 entry into JMSS, what does VCE look like for them? Like if someone does a VCE subject early in year 10 for their old school, will they be able to do their units 3 and 4 in year 11 and do their vce for that subject or do they have to start vce afresh from jmss year 11?

Hyein_09 also got a similar question with SEHS for year 11

        Hyein_09

typically, that early 3/4 subject will carry over into jmss (i.e. you will complete units 3/4 for that subject at jmss in yr11). i am not sure what this would look like if your early 3/4 subject (e.g. business management) was not offered at jmss, but maybe you would need to find a different provider? i hope this helps 😃

Oh thank you so much. btw, that early vce subject would be vce biology.

jmss definitely offers vce bio 🙂

from when i did it, they do check your reports, so try to maintain a high academic record, particularly for your early 3/4 (i.e. bio) if you are considering jmss yr11 entry (i know this may be fairly obvious, but this is especially important in this context).

          i hope this helps 🙂

t12 what letter grade for Bio do they want? eg B or A+

Do you know if JMSS allows you to accelerate in to VCE Algorithmics 3/4 in year 11 or only allowed in year 12?

Jearld sorry for the late reply, but upon meeting a certain criteria, i'm pretty sure they allow acceleration in yr11 !
