im interested in applying to monash for uni next year however I don't do methods or chem & both are prereqs for a few of the courses I'm interested in - I was wondering if I would still get accepted into the course or would I have to complete bridging courses to get in the course & how the system works if I don't meet the prereqs

for context: I did 1/2 methods & chem in year 11 but I moved schools in term 4 during year 11 and the school I got enrolled in didn't let me take methods or chem as the classes were full so I had to pick up another subject - just wondering now if this mistake will hinder my ability to get into my preferred course

cheers

Basically the answer is no, they won’t let you in, but you can go down one of several pathways. Let’s say for all examples you really wanted to study Monash biomed in the first place.

  1. Internal transfer: this is when you take a different Monash course that doesn’t include these prereqs e.g. Science, but will later allow you to transfer after 1-2 semesters. The closer the course, the better. You’ll need to ensure your grades are kept up and ATAR may be considered if you’re transferring in your first year of Uni. (Note: this won’t work for some courses, particularly med.)
  2. External transfer: take a similar/ same course but not at Monash that doesn’t include those prereqs e.g. Deakin Biomed. Again, keep your grades up and attempt transfer after a semester or two. This usually works less well because not all the units (subjects) will be counted when you go to Monash and therefore it will extend your time and cost more but at least you’ll only be studying biomed content in this method.
  3. Bridging course: an extra course each for Methods and Chem taken before you can apply for Monash biomed. Note: if I recall correctly, in recent years, the methods bridging course hasn’t been running and most students will take an equivalent unit e.g. MTH1020, to make up for it by instead. But check with Monash to see what your options are, as I’m not the most updated and I know very little about bridging courses.

Hope that helps! Please feel free to ask any more questions. 🙂
