I've been attending VSL for 5 years and it was definitely one of the best decisions. I am attending for a different language but from what I've seen, most of the other students have had positive experiences too. The flexibility for VSL will probably be advantageous for you, and, at my campus at least, the teachers offer a wide range of support at all times. They also do their best to accomodate to your level, for example, the language I'm learning is my second language and I've been speaking it for most of my life, so even though I am going into Year 10 next year, I'm doing Units 3&4. There have also been students who don't speak much of the language that recently started attending and I can tell that my teacher is definitely doing her best to give them the time and attention they need too. It's important to mention that the language I'm doing is considered a Small LOTE study, and most of my classmates are from the same (native) background, unlike Japanese which is usually taught internally.
Don't be discouraged, LOTE subjects are enjoyable and scale well! Best of luck!!
