Is it POSSIBLE to achieve a 99.95 ATAR with only 5 VCE subjects (Units 3/4)?

Hello,

I will be moving to Victoria next year and attending a Victorian high school (Year 12). As a result, I have not been accelerated under the VCE system. In addition, the school I will be attending will not permit me to take a 6th subject. Hence, I would like to know:

Would taking only 5 subjects completely rule out any chance of achieving a 99.95 ATAR?

I understand that this would be incredibly difficult (even with 6 subjects), however, is it in the least possible? If so, would it be wise to take a 6th subject externally and how could I go about doing that?

It is definitely possible if you subjects that scale above 50 such as spesh or a LOTE ie: chinese second lang and french, but overall it would be quite difficult almost impossible to do so with just 5 unless you are a academic unit at all subjects

Check out the VTAC aggregate to ATAR table from 2022. An ATAR of 99.95 required an aggregate of 211.05. 5 raw 50s gets you 205 (ATAR 99.80), so you would need an additional 6.05 aggregate points of scaling. The required aggregate changes each year and it has been higher in the past, but to get 99.95 with 5 subjects you must be basically a perfect student and study some of the best-scaling subjects.

In 2014, there was a student who scored:

Raw 50 Specialist (55)
Raw 50 English (50)
Raw 50 French (54)
Raw 47 Chinese (52.2)
Raw 50 Methods (51.8) - in that year specifically methods went to almost 52)
Raw 50 Chemistry + Physics (50)

He would have scored a 99.95 off just 4 subjects (211.2) in most years

This in practicality however is basically once in a generation however. To get 99.95 you basically need 6 (and to be extremely good at most of, if not all 6).

One way is distance learning, which VSV and Haileybury Pangea both offer.

You might be eligible as a ‘legitimate one year’ VCE student. You would receive a 6th subject increment equivalent to your 5th subject increment. Speak to your VCE coordinator as you’ve probably already been working with them to complete your application for credit.
