Hi, I'm currently a year 12 student and I'm really interested in international politics and law, so I'm hoping to study law at university.
Right now I'm leaning towards La Trobe Uni because it's super close to me and it offers a double degree in law and global studies which are two of my interests. Also I went to the open day last year and the staff seem really passionate about what they are teaching so it seems like I could learn a lot there. However I've heard that Melbourne is the best place to study law and although I'd really like to go there too, I'm not sure if it's worth it?
Melbourne doesn't offer undergraduate law which means that I'd have to do a bachelor of arts and then after that study a juris doctor (the equivalent of a bachelor of law from what I've heard), which is apparently really competitive as well. I'm sure the experience is great but tbh I'm not sure if I can be bothered doing one degree after the other when I could literally study two degrees alongside each other and graduate sooner. Not to mention the costs associated with that!
I'm just worried that choosing La Trobe may impact my ability to pursue a career in law (I'm interested in criminal and international if it helps), because I understand that while it is a really good uni, many regard Melbourne and Monash as more prestigious.
Could anyone who has studied or is studying law at La Trobe or Melb (or just anyone with knowledge on this topic) please share their experiences? Is it actually worth it to do law at Melb?
Sorry for the lengthy post, and any answers would be greatly appreciated thank you xx
