Do I need to do English as well as Lit?

so i moved schools earlier this year and right now it's y11 subject selection. my plan was pretty much always to do lit instead of normal english and i told this to my careers counsellor and she told me I have to do english as well in year 11 and i can drop it in year 12? i don't even remember what her reasoning was but it made no sense to me because i'd never heard of that before. i asked some other people about it and they all said that wasn't a rule at their school. i was wondering if there was an actual academic reason for this? is there stuff you learn in y11 english that you need for lit? thanks

How strange! You definitely don't need to do English Units 1&2 in order to do Lit 3&4. I think it might be just thing at your school?

I can only assume that your school wants you to do English 1&2, just in case you decide you not to Lit 3&4 (and do English 3&4). The 2 subjects are quite different - you definitely don't need one subject to do the other, but it might be difficult to change if say, you did Lit 1&2 and then wanted to do English 3&4. So maybe your school is covering all bases and just making sure you can easily do English 3&4 if you need to?
