Hi guys, I'm In Year 10 right now and have already picked out my subjects for Year 11.
I have picked English, Methods, Chemistry, Psychology, Human Bio and Physics. I am quite unsure about Physics and Human Bio as some of my older classmates told me that doing both Human Bio and Psych would be really hard. I also don't really know about Physics and I am quite unsure If i should have picked it.
I am thinking that I might swap out Human Bio or Physics for Modern History which is also a subject I really like and intended on picking. But I heard it's not that useful compared to others and that it is a very content-heavy subject with a lot of memorisation.
So, I'm not sure whether I should stick with the subjects I have picked or replace Human Bio or Physics for Modern History. I also don't want to put too much stress on my self but I know I picked really hard subjects.
I also want to keep my options open as I am quite unsure on what I would like to pursue in uni or in the future.
Any help is appreciated.
Unsure about ATAR subject selections.

Most of the statements that you have listed are what you've heard from others. Attitudes, achievement etc. is subjective -what might be difficult/useful to some might not be the case for you. Important to remember that you are more likely to be successful if you choose subjects that you are interested and engaged in (and those you need for potential university prerequisites). If you aren't sure what you want to do post-schooling, understanding the most common uni prerequisites is important so you can prepare yourself. It's also worth noting that in the vast majority of cases, you are able to complete equivalent prerequisites at university and transfer after at least one semester (just might take a little longer to get to the end goal).
I am quite unsure about Physics and Human Bio as some of my older classmates told me that doing both Human Bio and Psych would be really hard.
Do what you feel is best. Not what somebody else has told you. You might actually find taking on "harder" subjects may motivate and engage you more (could also be the complete opposite, depending on how you react to situations like this!). Hopefully you have done some elective options in this space or covered these areas in Science in year 9/10 that give you at least some idea of your feelings towards these sciences?

If History is something you really enjoy and you think you might do well in it - then maybe this is a good option for you.
But I heard it's not that useful compared to others and that it is a very content-heavy subject with a lot of memorisation.
Not useful according to who? Again, subjective. I think personally the fact you like it trumps the worries here.
Your subject choices at present are very science/maths heavy. History could be a great balance subject for you. At the same time, I would look into any scaling consequences of choosing history, especially if you're somebody who wants a high ATAR. Speaking to a careers counsellor at your school is really important in situations like these, because they will know you better than anyone here (or able to ask somebody at your school who does know you) and can give you better advice. My advice here is purely based on what you have typed without knowing you or your personal circumstances.
Good luck!

Thanks for the response to my query. I will take your advice into consideration.
But I am still quite unsure on what subject I should remove from my current selection to replace with Modern History. What subject be the best option logic-wise/scaling-wise to remove while also having most options open for uni?
I would like to keep Psychology, Methods and English as I like those subjects.
Thanks.
okay this is probably going to sound really annoying and you’ve probably heard it before but I highly recommend NOT PICKING SUBJECTS BASED ON SCALING.
Someone might choose methods because it scales well but if they’re not actually interested in maths, they’re gonna end up struggling and have a difficult time. You are better off picking subjects that you know you will enjoy. VCE is a roller coaster and my personal experience was that even if you pick subjects you love, sometimes it can still be hard for you to enjoy them because of so much stress. So imagine how much worse it would be if you pick subjects based on scaling that you only “like” but not “love”.
In terms of taking a wide variety of subjects for uni, I was in the same boat as you. I picked pretty broad subjects and I think the ones you have are well-rounded (all uni’s are different but they mostly look at having english, some sort of maths- btw methods widens your options so that’s a really good choice, chemistry is also good too especially if your interested in science)
Don’t stress too much about the subjects, but at the same time take it seriously. Talk to your teachers who teach VCE subjects about the curriculum or look at the study design (very helpful), ask yourself “do I want to study this for 2 years?” Remember anyone can do it, they just need to have the passion to do it!!
I hope this helps and good luck!! )
Thank you! I was always unsure on what to pick as I am not really a STEM guy or Humanities, like I don't dislike either. Most of my friends/peers went on like specific routes while I am quite unsure as I want to keep my options open.
