Hi,I am currently in yr 9 and i was hoping to do 2 vce subjects next year (Chem and General Unit 1&2),but then i did a reality check and i wsnt so sure about doing 2 of them.So now im just sticking to chem but then i really wanna finish general math in yr 10 as it is really easy, but im really worried if i can manage the workload as im doing yr 10 pre methods as well. Also if i do unit 1&2 of general math in yr 10 and unit 3&4 in yr 11 and imagine i didn't get the desired results can i swap general for another subject and do unit 3&4 of other subject in yr 12.
These are the overall subjects im thinking of doing:
English (obvi)
Methods
General
Chemistry
Physics (altho im not a big fan of it)
Pls share your opinions so that i can think over on what i need to choose
VCE IN YR 10
Doing a 1/2 subject in Year 10 can be tricky, especially considering that you're moving over a whole year of content. I wouldn't advise doing two, unless your Year 9 teachers are absolutely sure you can handle the workload.
If you do 3/4 in Year 11, and don't get a good score, you can in fact redo the subject in Year 12 as a 3/4, and your better study score will be counted towards your ATAR. I'm not sure switching to another 3/4 subject is possible without the doing 1/2 class before, although I think it depends on the school and the subject. I'd ask your Year 9 teachers for advice on what to do, and if your school has a VCE coordinator, try talking to them too
YOMAMA Hi! So I did 1 vce subject in year ten (I'm in yr 11 rn and just had my final exam) and it was definitely one of the best decisions in my opinion. It gives you a really good chance to focus on a single subject since your year 10 subjects don't really contribute to anything major (still try your best ofc). If I were you I would just do one early vce subject rather than two because the work load is more demanding in vce, so it would give you the best chance to excel in one particular subject. Considering that chem is a heavy content subject, doing it early would give you a better chance of getting your desired results. I would suggest talking to your teachers before making any decisions as well just to get some extra advice! Hope this helps
Hi there!
I just finished my year 12 exams, and I have done a couple of your preferred subjects.
My (very personal) opinion is that an 'easy' subject should be kept for year 12, and the more 'difficult' subjects at year 11. This depends on personal factors, but I did a language 3&4 subject in year 11 and it was very easy for me. Then in year 12, having 'difficult' subjects was more stressful. So I would suggest you start chemistry earlier so that you can focus on it with less stress. (There are quite a few difficult to grasp content in year 11 and 12 chemistry.)
But all this is just my personal opinion.
Also, may I ask your reason for choosing physics, if you don't think you will enjoy it? Because unless you are looking for a specific course after high-school, I don't think doing a subject that you aren't keen on will do you any good.
Hey,
I agree with the majority. If you're worried about workload it's probably best for you to stick with 1 VCE subject for year 10. Definitely talk to your teachers as they would know your capability best.
If you want general advice on what subjects to pick, this might help! https://www.matrix.edu.au/free-vce-subject-selection-guide-for-year-10-students/
@geometry dash meltdown I'll try it.

*Update
So, I ended up taking two VCE subjects this year (General Math and Chem) and honestly, it’s not as bad as I thought it would be. Chemistry can be a bit of a struggle, but I’m actually enjoying it, (kinda weird since I’ve never liked it before) General Math is just like Year 9 enhanced math but with a little extra info, so it’s not even that tough. I thought these subjects would be way harder. Now, Chemistry SAC is coming up this Monday, and I really hope I don’t fail (fingers crossed)
