  • Medicine After High School TIPS

Hi All. I'm currently in Year 8 and want to pursue a career in medicine, possibly as a cardiothoracic surgeon. I'm going into Year 9 next year but was recently offered a spot in the SEAL program so I will be studying Year 10 content. Due to this, I am really confused about when should I start studying for the UCAT, what subjects I should take to fit prerequisite requirements for an undergraduate degree in biomed at Melb uni. Should I also try studying for year 11 subject to be prepared? Overall, I'm extremely confused so any help would be great as well as tips to get into medicine.

omg same, though I'm in year 11.
You want to pick the subjects that scales well like I'm taking spec, methods, GE, bio, physics and chem. Those set you up well. However, you also have to do well in these subjects so also pick subjects that you are good at.

In terms of UCAT, you can start anytime you like, the more you do, the better you are at it. I wouldn't start year 11 work if you haven't even gotten to year 10. You'll just burn yourself out, and i learnt this the hard way lol.

haha ok thank u.glad to know there are like minded people 😄

      Hello!
For subject prerequisites, you can check each university's specific page for the course you want.
Biomedicine in Melbourne university and Monash requires any English subject, Chemistry and Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics.
UCAT isn't required for Melbourne University's guaranteed pathway, but to keep your options open I would say that during holidays before year 12 starts or even a little bit earlier would give you time to practice leisurely throughout the year.
As for subjects, don't pick something that you won't enjoy to some extent, at least. If you can (and are good at/fluent in), I suggest a LOTE subject and any other subject that you find interesting. Biology is also a good idea (in my opinion) since your preferred courses will be quite heavy in biology content.
Hope this is helpful! Also, don't stress because there are more than one pathway to get into medicine and fulfill prerequisites.
