frog_of_spades hi! investigative journalism is super cool, and also the field of journalism i am interested in!!
i think it's important to remember in this day and age that direct written forms of journalism aren't as popular as they were 2 decades ago, due to the likes of social media, streaming media online (spotify, youtube), making the news more accessible. and monash definitely takes this into account with their course, as there is not so much a focus on audio/broadcasting journalism, but units tend to lean towards those forms. this isn't a discouragement by any means, as you should keep in mind that prior to the broadcast or audio being recorded, there needs to be written. written will always be important, and that will never change. what is important that you also diversify your skillset, thus broadcasting and audio journalism, as well as documentaries etc being offered at monash.
i would assume written skills are taught. i am apart of mojo news (student run news at monash) and there is an emphasis on writing skills and interviewing skills from the outset, so even as a first year student who is yet to practice journalism in their classes, i get to do so outside of the class environment.
hope that helps a little bit, and sorry for the yap
ooh i forgot this thread existed.
wildflower by billie eilish as i begin my hour long commute to unikayyyy hi! i (sorta) do media and comms at uni, but i major in journalism at monash (1st year).
it is quite similar to media and comms besides some core units relating to the media which you need to take. i think monash has state of the art facilities- broadcasting studio, audio equipment, cameras, etc. the course is structured so you can gain practical work and build a portfolio.
monash also has mojonews, a student run news portal which i am newly apart of, and also helps in building a portfolio.
unimelb in relation to media and comms isn't the best from what ive heard, thus my decision to study at monash. rmit also has a good course too, i think this is something you should also decide at open days in august.
Rey_of_sunshine tutes are quite fun + are great to meet people (speaking anecdotally). also clubs are where you'll meet the most like-minded people (once more, speaking anecdotally).
hope the rest of week 1 runs smoothly!!
Rey_of_sunshine glad you're enjoying uni!! i relate to the conversation thing, it does get quite dull but hopefully now that classes have started that you meet more like-minded people that make conversation making much easier!!

as i await for my first train of two (first one got cancelled lol) amidst painstakingly annoying disruptions of BOTH my trains today (thanks ptv), here is an update!!
o-week was BAD. im usually optimistic but goddamn it was so boring, and everyone was really dry
, im hoping i make more friends as actual classes start. i did spend most of last week doing a final proper catch up with my friends outside of uni as things are going to get busyy- had a picnic, yap session, breakfast and brunch with all my friends, and am grabbing ice cream with one last friend tomorrow after uni.
today i don't have an actual class. at monash, they have a journalism thingy called mojonews, so im going to their meeting today and am going to join. it can help build my portfolio which i need heading into the journalism industry, so that will be a good test.
for now, i brave through the delays and pray ptv doesn't throw any more surprises.
hope everyone is well + enjoying uni/school
edit: 2nd train also got cancelled. my 1hr journey turned into almost 2hrs
FinFin-3rdYearUni yeah the transition is weird. i forgot i didn't need permission to leave to get a coffee and got up without asking which was weird yet so so relieving.
and YESSS definitely getting lots of sleep, with the commute 3 days a week it's going to be exhausting but i cannot wait for the first week of classes!!
it has been a long while since i yapped here and considering i cannot sleep for the life of me, i suppose i can update with the very little that changed since the last time i wrote...
i have jump-start at monash today which is scary because it's officially the first orientation event i have. already made a friend which is so fun because now im not worrying about going alone. my goal was to make one new friend and here we are reaching that goal before uni even starts (go me!!
)
i also got a scholarship yay!! it's $6k a year for the length of my course which is 3 years, meaning over a third of the fees are covered which is a huge relief. i also have an external $1k scholarship which i can spend on myki, a new laptop that i still haven't bought, etc.
it is quite scary that im adulting my way through life right now. still no success on the job side of things and i didn't get the last job i had an interview for, but i keep trying and hoping for the best.
on that note, i should technically be waking up in another hour and 15 minutes so might take a nap lol. i will update with a jump-start debrief afterwards!! take care all
Rey_of_sunshine bachelor of arts twin's
. all the best for the year!! i have a few friends studying at unimelb too so if you're in a distinctive cosplay outfit i might see you when i visit them
Anonymous2007 after each chapter is a good method, i did it after each class but that doesn't always work.
you can add whatever to your bound. scroll down to bound references here to find specifications.
Anonymous2007 do this as u go throughout the year- you can leave blank pages in between topics if you want to add stuff.
some people handwrite and others use textbook notes and glue it in. find which one you can synthesise better. you want to have the most information in the least amount of space so you dont waste time endlessly searching for stuff. having a few bell curves to fill in can help, as well as any finance solver formulas. you won't need an example for every concept (ie: lower/upper fence formula is quite simple and doesn't need an example), whereas crashing in networks is more difficult and it might be beneficial to have an example.
also, keep a "mistake bank" at the back of your bound for difficult practice exam questions.
matureagedstudent prove i cheated. honestly if you can prove if i cheated, and that i in fact didn't put effort in, go ahead.
remember one thing; you can have all the notes you want if you cheat, but if you dont know how to formulate an answer that meets the demands of the questions, cheating is useless.
don't appreciate being called a cheater either...- Edited
matureagedstudent Wait until you’re 23 years old to cringe at your teenage self.
wait under you're 45 and cringe at your 23 year old self, it's just life no need to be pessimistic.
matureagedstudent Cheating happens all the time in school, it’s the only way to get 100% on a VCAA state exam
also encouraging cheating and saying it's the only way to do well on a vcaa exam is NOT true one bit. i managed a 93 on one exam and there was no cheating involved, and proves that hard work pays off. so it'd be great if you stop being in every page and spreading negativity because it's truly dulling.
can we like, not be typing random stuff in my journal please- make something separate to do whatever you want to call this
FinFin-3rdYearUni thanks!! from what ive read, the mentors will be from the arts faculty.
and you're very right, i have no idea what im going into
. scared and excited.
also fees are 17k PER YEAR!?!?! insanity
considering i caught covid (dramatic sigh), i suppose i should do a mini-update here.
i completed by my timetabling preferences and i will, if i get my preferences, only be on campus for classes 3 days a week. i decided i’d do an 8am class (even though that will mean a 5:30am wake-up) because i’ll have a 4pm class the same day, meaning i can have a study orientated day in between classes… yes i was thinking smarter and not harder.
i also enrolled for peer mentoring for the first semester, meaning i will have a mentor from the arts faculty for 12 weeks. unsure what to expect to be honest, but it opens scholarship opportunities and i might meet some people which is what i am most scared of.
awaiting the orientation schedule to be released, but for the time being, i will be indulging in horror movies to bypass time, and listening to lots and lots of music.
