    st06 hi!!! i didn't do JMSS myself but my close friend got in. she was also lacking in english and science, and what she used to do was borrow senior textbooks (usually bio, physics and chem) from the library and practice from them! all selective exams are always 1-2 years above the year level curricula, so working from senior textbooks always ensures that you have a strong grasp of the topics that will probably be on the test.
    you can also make flashcards etc of these topics and practice daily in the morning, sort of like a routine.

    for writing, that's something that comes with practice unfortunately. you just have to keep on writing. i also advice reading widely and frequently. your local library is an amazing resource with plenty of books.

        about me

        hi! frequent lurker, first time making an account and posting! my (online) name is velvet, she/her, i'm currently in yr 10 and decided to start a journal to keep myself accountable and what-not! i know journals are normally a vce thing but i plan to start a seperate journal for yr 11 and 12. plus, it'd be fun to compare yr10 me vs senior me, i think.

        i've been obsessed with reading journals (esp. @possible_to_return_passport and @FH's journals) n feel like having a little account of my life somewhere out there would also help my mental health.

        i've always been a good student but i've been really struggling with my mental health since year 7. i also had a major falling out with a close friend last year n my grades took a dip because of it. i've been hoping to get back on track but my term one scores really weren't it up to my regular standard. i've seen how positive journals can be and i feel like having my own and people to talk to about school would be great as most of my friends are older than me (yr 11+) and are really busy rn 🙁
        now that the more important stuff is out of the way, here are my classes and future plans!

        classes

        i'm currently taking..

        legal 1 & 2: i absolutely love legal and my teacher, but the workload is crazy. tbh, i should've expected it, but its really been getting to me. HOWEVER i did score great on my last sac so i have high hopes
        enhanced english: i really hate my class but my teacher's alright. i've always been excellent in english (at least 2-3 years above my peers according to my last report) but i have a bad habit of experimenting with structure ON MY TESTS because i basically just see it as a personal writing task (which its not). its a habit i really need to grow out of it.
        math pre-methods: i hate my teacher but my score has been improving. mostly due to tutoring + some all nighters.
        religion: i do really well and i love my teacher. i might do religions and societies at VCE level if i don't do VSV philosophy, but thats a maybe.
        accounting (mandatory yr 10 elective): its alright. my teacher's amazing and he's so fun but the topic itself is really bland. its just excel 101.
        japanese: love my teacher and love the subject. i'm definitely doing it at VCE level. i get alright grades, not the best, but its such a fun class that i don't mind.
        english literature (yr 10, elective): haven't taken it yet. its been shifted to sem2 because our teacher left and they couldn't find a new one in time.
        science: i also haven't taken it yet because its a sem2 class.

        future plans

        i..really don't know. i 100% know i want to study bachelor of the arts at melb with a philosophy + english major and screen and cultural studies minor. i love movies and i was considering film school, but i want something more stable, so i'm also considering a career in research or even law.

        what i'm doing right now

        holidays are in 2 days so im just swimming through school. we aren't doing much in any of my classes except legal and pre-methods (grr). obv i have a lot of holiday hw which is a bit annoying because my cousins are travelling from my country of origin to here over the term 1 holidays. its going to be so hard to get hw with them around but ill manage. probably.
