Hi guys,
I am currently in Year 10 and subject selections are coming up soon, I want to do medicine after school and for that I need to get a 99+ ATAR. I have decided on most of my subjects but I need help to choose one. I do not want any arts subjects or history, I do love science and maths. Are there any subjects that you can recommend me to take. Also how are your experiences in English Lang? Is it good or would I be better off taking normal English?

  1. English Language
  2. Biology
  3. Chemistry
  4. Maths Methods
  5. General Maths (Early access in year 11)
  6. This is the blank spot.

Thank you so much!

Hey, I am currently doing a lightened load in year 12. I did biology accelerated and now am doing 4 subjects in year 12. That is always an option as it has opened me up tp have so much more time for chemistry, methods and english. I chose to to Theatre studies as a fun subject but the other option I would suggest is psychology. It is a very easy science subject although content heavy.

Jess33 also it is very hard to get straight into medicine. I know someone who got a 99.96 ATAR and didn't get in. I do know someone who did very well on the UCAT though and got an interveiw before ATAR results were even published. So remember not to stress too much about yuear 12. You can also always do a general science degree and transfer into medicine.

Thats a good subject selection! Very important to also think about UCAT as well for medicine. Some people with 99.9+ don't even get an interview because of bad UCAT.

Would recommend specialist math, or another scaling subject, for the 6th slot if you love math.

Thank you for your reply, I have decided on Specialist maths. Any thoughts on English Language?

        Hi FutureDR!

In our experience, mainstream English and English Language are two very different subjects! Mainstream English has a lot of breadth, particularly in this current study design, and students have tended to enjoy the range of writing it allows for, so if you're not great at a particular type of writing or analysis, your whole score doesn't hinge on that and you're likely to enjoy another part of the study design a bit more.

English Language is very narrow in terms of its scope - it is all about how the construction of language (note - NOT English, language!) is used to achieve social and cultural purposes. So if you don't enjoy that scope of study, the subject is going to be pretty miserable for you! In terms of the tasks, a large proportion is technically analysing pieces of communication in great depth, and you have short answers, longer answers and entire essays you'll have to write.

We have blog post here about all 3 VCE English subjects.

Our usual recommendation is to choose a subject that you're likely to enjoy (because then you'll be more motivated to work hard at it), and one that suits your learning and writing strengths, rather than looking at whether something will scale well or is more 'score-able'. Whichever way you choose, good luck! And feel free to reach out for 1:1 tutoring if you feel you're in need of extra support. 🙂
