I'm currently a year 11 student, and I take quite a variety of subjects so I'm kind of all over the place. At the moment I take English extension 1 and maths extension 1 on top of my other subjects, and I'm sitting at 12 units. I was thinking of picking up an extension next term when I go into year 12, but I'm incredibly indecisive.
I was thinking of picking up either extension 2 English or extension history (as I'm currently taking ancient history), but I have no idea which or even if I'll pick up at all! I don't know anyone who is doing/has done extension 2 English, so it would be great to hear about someone else's experience and whether or not it was rewarding. I don't have very much experience writing lengthier pieces, though, and tend to have a very hard time coming up with ideas for anything. I've heard a bit more about history extension, and the idea of historiography (I think that's what it's called?) seems quite interesting, and I like the idea of having so much freedom in the course.
I'm still not sure if either of these would be right for me, though, as I tend to be the person to leave everything to the last minute and spend half my time procrastinating (as I'm doing right now, funnily enough). I also already take physics and visual arts, so I'm not sure that adding another major work would be too much for me.
I was also thinking about dropping extension 1 maths, as I don't know how much use it is to me - I have no idea what I'm planning on doing once I leave school - but it seems to be eating up my time more than anything. I also don't really enjoy it (I find myself hating it a lot of the time) but I don't know if it would be more rewarding in the long run to keep the subject.
But back to the choice between English and history - it's a tough choice for me, as I value both subjects a lot. I know that my results in my current subjects may not be a great indicator of how well I'm going to do in the extension, but I'm getting pretty good marks in English adv/ext and ancient. I'm ranking 1st in ancient and extension 1 English and 2nd in advanced English, though I don't go to a particularly competitive school. I'm scoring somewhere around 97% in ancient and 90% in English.
I'm now realising this is getting very long and turning into somewhat of a rant, so I'll end it here. If anyone has any advice or any relevant experiences I would greatly appreciate it!
extension subjects
Hi!Hope you're having a good day so far
Do you have any idea as to what future career path you're planning to take?
Would it be beneficial with history? (Law and arts fields)
Hi!
I have pretty much no idea I haven't put that much thought into it yet. Probably not law, but something closer to arts? I basically have absolutely no direction at all.
I'm in pretty much the same boat. Right now I'm doing 13 units including Ext. 1 English. I'm tossing up whether to pick Ext. History or Ext. 2 (or maybe even both). I do very well at both English and Modern (1st in Modern and Adv., unsure of Ext.), but I'm worried that I may be taking on too many major works. I currently do Drama and S&C (though thinking of dropping Soc, maybe drama too), and managing fine at the moment, but obviously I haven't started either major work yet and so the workload will increase exponentially. I want to try to keep 12 units if possible so if one subject is getting too stressful I have leeway. Just kind of wondering what the pros/cons are to each extension I guess?

That's perfectly fine, you still have time to decide on your interests paths. For this, I would recommend talking to a careers advisor if you have one at your school because talking to my careers advisor gave me the perfect way to move forward with deciding which subjects to drop and what courses to pick in Uni. If this is not available, I would recommend exploring courses you might be interested in and if there is atleast a field that you know you'd want to choose courses from in Uni, it would be much easier to pick between your subjects. for example, a course such as Speech pathology would be more inclined towards your extension2 english results whereas a course such as Sociology would be more interested in your history skills and knowledge. Hope you continue striving hard and doing well, goodluck!
