For integration, anything below the the x axis is negative, and anything above is positive.
In the question you are referring to
There is more area under the x axis then above so it should be understandable why the integral approximation is negative. When it asks for an integral approximation, it's just asking you to approximate the integral not to do something different such as approximate area.
