Hello!
I really need some help making this urgent decision! Recently I got my subject selection for 2023. I am happy with my other subjects, but they are quite content-heavy (i.e. spesh, methods, chem, eng, and Bio 3/4). I will be in Year 11 in 2023, and starting at a new school. However, I have studied German up to Year 10 level at an average public school and I'll have to do VCE German through VSL distance education. Originally, I had planned to do unit 1/2 German next year but they've accidently assigned me to 3/4. I am not sure if I should do unit 1/2 and be more prepared for 3/4, or just do 3/4 and redo it in Year 12 if I get bad study score. BTW I am also going to be doing VCE units 3/4 Bio next Year, so if i pick 3/4 German, I'll be doing two 3/4s early. I am aiming for a high 45+ mark for German & Bio. HELP!!
Urgent help needed!! Should I do VCE GERMAN 3/4 without units 1/2?
Also, German isn't my first language. I've only studied it since Year 7
Hi! Do you reckon there's any way you could switch into 1/2? Like, have you talked to your senior coordinator or whoever does your subject selections at this new school? I think that would probably be the first option you should go through with.
If you're aiming for a high 45+ mark, I would definitely recommend doing units 1/2, sometimes you don't realise how handy they are until the end of the year (this was me with Japanese). This also gives you time to notice and improve your personal weak areas within language. For an example, you may find out that you are stronger with writing than you are with listening, doing 1/2 gives you time to practice listening before it goes towards your ATAR in 3/4. Mistakes you make initially can be improved within the time you give yourself in 1/2. Language is hard, it needs a lot of practice!
I found this website whilst searching for VCE German and I think it's pretty handy if you need any study tips or resources - this one here is a bit old, so I wouldn't listen to point 1 (I don't think the study design is the same, but you could probably get the general gist with it).
So basically: ask if you can do 1/2, find a way to do the 1/2 because it is important for language especially, and good luck! Let us know how the whole decision making process goes!

I second this. Doing a 1/2 through VSV will give you time to get used to virtual learning, and will give you extra study lessons (great considering your content heavy subjects). If you don't get the study score you want, you are welcome to do it the following year (but look up your school's policies about how many subjects you can do in year 12, you might not be able to redo both german and bio, as that makes up 6 subjects in one year).
