I am currently taking James an but im not sure if it is effective. I’m not sure if u can rlly compare but if u’ve done Henderson and James an which one did u find more effective (sorry for asking so many questions🤭)

I took the same training course as you too. Henderson is effective (if you want to get accelerated and pro tips) and James Ann helped me with getting stronger in specific areas. I can't really tell which is more effective - sorry.
I think that Henderson is not necessary if you are already excelling in James Ann tests, but it is up to you.

NSN i feel like reading is a strong subject for u so u might’ve not been as challenged but some ppl have said that the poems in this test were hard to understand and answer. Is that true?

Not really 😅 (I was actually weak in it at the start). For me, the poems weren't quite as difficult as the other texts. (I think one or two were though). You just need to be able to interpret figurative language. That is why reading novels helps a lot.

In the reading comp paper that I did this year, there were about 5-10 texts (each one only about one and a half pages long). Speaking of the questions, they were mostly asking about the vocabulary in the text and the usual comprehension of the text, not so much the punctuation (becos everyone knows that).

Hi guys,
I am sitting y9 entry in june and I was hoping anyone could share some tips on how to prepare for the victorian selective exam. I am currently in ACT and have been preparing for a few months but with the new ACER tests, I am a bit confused about how it will be different from before and what types of questions I can expect. I would really appreciate if anyone had anything to share on the different subjects and topics that will be coming (Like the topics and can study beforehand).

From what I can recall, no, as that is too basic. So yes, its more of vocabulary and word-based puzzles.

NSN Can you give some examples of the types of vocabulary featured in the tests. Also, are the selective questions in the test for math and reading roughly equivalent to secondary school PAT testing( If it's done at your school.) 🙂

Just aim to learn atleast 2 new words everyday (words that you don't see or use frequently). About the PAT testing, I do not know as it is not done in my school, sorry.

Maths - If maths is harder than English for you (like me), I suggest you do a LOT of practice. Revise the Yr 8 curriculum/crucial concepts and also the material for two years ahead! (For this year it was not really required, as it contained Yr 8 content only).

Quantitative Reasoning - This was definitely the hardest for me. Master number sequences and relationships, ratio, proportion and rates, spatial reasoning etc. Know which ones to skip and do not spend long figuring out how to solve a question.

I will just give some tips on all of the five tests:

RC - It was surprisingly easy this year as there were only about 1/ 1 and a half pages of material followed by 5-10 questions. Try to read the questions first before reading the text: this helps you read with a sense of purpose and saves time!
Maths - If maths is harder than English for you (like me), I suggest you do a LOT of practice. Revise the Yr 8 curriculum/crucial concepts and also the material for two years ahead! (For this year it was not really required, as it contained Yr 8 content only).
VR - Practice analogies, expose yourself to a broad range of words, and basically everything that includes puzzles with words. This was also reasonably easy this year.
NR - This was definitely the hardest for me. Master number sequences and relationships, ratio, proportion and rates, spatial reasoning etc. Know which ones to skip and do not spend long figuring out how to solve a question.
Writing (creative) - Do not think of a complex plot as this is very much time consuming and leaves you with insufficient time to finish your story. A basic plot is enough - the techniques and your style of writing is what makes it stand out.
Writing (persuasive) - Sharpen up your writing techniques (for instance rhetorical questions) and use as many as you can (for both writing pieces.) Make sure you are familiar with the structure of the writing piece. Also, it is very important to PLAN for 1-2 mins before writing the actual essay. This allows you to continuously write and finish on time. Lastly, practicing enough is essential to excel in this area (and everywhere else too!)
