Could anyone give me feedback for this essay (its kinda bad i was rly tired and couldn't focus lol)?
Prompt: The below infographics depicts the overview of coral bleaching. Write an essay which addresses the importance of maintenance of coral health as well as solutions to prevent further bleaching of corals. (i cant attatch the graphic but if u need it tell me)
Coral bleaching, which is caused by a stressed relationship between coral and algae, is extremely dangerous to not only coral but its surrounding ecosystems. This issue is one of the largest concerns about marine life and ecosystems, as the increase in pollution and temperature caused by humans has caused a large amount of coral bleaching, which has shown no signs of improving. However, if no action is taken soon, the detrimental effects may soon be beyond human repair.
Coral receives its food and colour from a special type of Algae, zooxanthellae, meaning they share a symbiotic, or long term relationship. This means that if their relationship is stressed or cut off, it has many negative effects on either both or one organism. An increase in temperature, pollution, sunlight exposure and low tides, all factors caused by humans, all cause a strained relationship between the algae and coral. This causes the algae to leave the coral tissue, where it resides, leaving the coral vulnerable and without food. This then leads to the coral becoming diseased and dying.
Despite coral dying being a natural occurrence, the increase in pollution and other factors are rapidly increasing the effects, which are not balanced naturally. This means that many ecosystems are losing large amounts of coral, which are an essential habitat for many fish and other marine creatures. This can lead to an increase or decrease in certain species, as one may be hunted more due to loss of habitat, and this predator may reproduce quicker, which then causes an imbalance of the food chain, which can further decrease the health of the ecosystem, especially in the occurrence of a trophic cascade, which may fully kill the ecosystem. This is precisely why coral health should be maintained, as the effects of bleached coral lead to more than just dead coral.
However, preventative methods taken by humans may be able to save the coral reef ecosystems. Increased ocean temperatures, increased pollution runoffs and high sunlight exposure have all been caused by humans, through an increase in waste and the greenhouse effect. Therefore, if we reduce these two things, the effects would benefit the coral. To do this, the government should organise more beach clean ups, and possibly put programs such as rewards for collecting plastic into play, which will help reduce waste. Another possible solution is companies making reusable items and longer lasting products more affordable, as well as focusing on their environmental impacts. Furthermore, more mandated plastic bans will certainly help rid the ocean of one of its many pollutants. To help decrease global warming, more people should turn to renewable energy sources in order to reduce the need for fossil fuels. This can be further supported by the government, by making these energy sources such as solar, wind and hydro, more accessible.
Coral bleaching, which is caused by a strained relationship between coral and zooxanthellae algae, causes the algae to leave the coral, leaving it vulnerable and nutrient-less, causing its death. This strain is a result of pollution, temperature increases and low tides. However it is extremely important that coral health is maintained as it has a detrimental effect on marine ecosystems. In order to reduce these effects, humans should focus on less pollution, with trying to reduce plastic usage, cleaning up the oceans and focusing on using long lasting products. They should also focus on lowering the greenhouse effect by switching to renewable energy sources. Many of these fixes should be prioritised and supported by the government, as the marine ecosystems cannot survive without coral, and if no human action is taken now the ecosystems will be ruined.
