Hello, I have subject selections next week and I wanted to hear some opinions. I’m currently a year 9 and go to a pretty unacademic school. We can take a Vce subject next year if we have good grades. I wanted to convince my teachers to allow me to take two, one of them being general but I’m unsure of what to choose between biology and chemistry.

I want to study radiography and medical imaging at Monash and I have to get around a 93 ATAR. I’m pretty academically capable and that’s why I want to do two. My plan is to do general next year since it’s pretty easy and aim for a high study score and either bio or chem. I don’t actually have any prior knowledge for it but I enjoy sciences and feel like I could do it. I’ve also heard that that the stuff you learn in year 10 chem is barely anything of the actual units. Further and bio are a requirement for the course I want to do, so I’m thinking about doing it next year so I could put more time into it. But I’m scared I’ll mess up in a way and am thinking about doing chemistry so that even if I get an average study score and am not towards the top of my cohort it’ll be alright. Please help

So since you want to study imaging I say go for bio but to be more hands on for example diagnosing people then go chem

Zuko I would say do bio as typically it is a lot more of a popular subject to accelerate. My school doesnt let people accelerate chem cause they say we NEED to do the year 10 equivalent, therefore everyone accelerates bio and tends to do well, so I would say do bio, and choose chem for year 11/12

if bio is the necessary one then i suggest you pursue with that bc ultimately if your aspiration in terms of your job in the future involves a heavy reliance of biology then at least you will get used to bio and be more prepared sort of thing.

haps thank you so much. But do you think that bio is really content heavy? And is it just mainly memorisation or is there any calculations involved for sacs and stuff

Zuko i did 1/2 bio, it is really dense content. it isn’t so much memorisation, more application in specific situations.

like for example: ‘a chicken with pink feathers is crossed with a chicken with purple feathers. offspring has both pink and purple feathers. determine its genotype.’

you don’t actually need to know the idea of genotypes, rather apply it to that situation. so yes, you do need to know what you’re talking about, but you wont necessarily be regurgitating facts.
