It would really cool to hear what everyone's doing this year in their high school/uni/career/gap year journeys this year!
How are you finding this year? What are your subjects? Are people working part time while studying or doing any extracurricular activities? For people who have finished highschool/uni how are you finding work and life after studying?

Me:
I'm currently studying psychology at Monash whilst working in a cafe and as a support worker! I'm planning on working less this semester to spend more time studying. I'm not currently doing any extracurricular activities but thinking of maybe starting dance again soon

I'm currently in yr 12 this year and find it quite hectic. My subjects are spesh, methods, psych, eng lang and chem. I don't have a job as of now as I want to focus on my studies and will be definitely getting one after exams. I'm also planning to watch the avatar sequel and minions when school finishes. I still need to watch the first avatar movie tho. 🀣 πŸ˜…

I am currently a year 10 student studying VCE methods and psychology units 1/2. I am really enjoying my VCE subjects, and I am fortunate enough to have excellent teachers for both. Psychology is just super interesting, and I love the problem solving aspect of maths. I'm also working at McDonald's, with minimal shifts (maybe 7–12 hours per week) as I want to prioritise school. I've genuinely gained a lot of skills working at McDonald's for only 3 months, and I'm very grateful for the pressure my parents put on me to get a job.

I’m currently working in the science/ health care field, after completing my Honours degree in 2018 (evolutionary genetics, a completely different field; my honours journal can be found (https://archive.atarnotes.com/forum/index.php?topic=175559.0)). I find full time work to be less hectic day-to-day than the uni/ part time or casual work combination, but also more tiring, given you don’t have many breaks unless you take leave. Uni felt like a sprint, whereas full time work feels like a marathon.

Outside of work, my extracurricular activities constantly vary. My current one is knitting and I’m madly knitting a gift for a friend. I’m also in the middle of planning several things, one of which is a trip overseas!

Currently in my second year of my science undergrad - very slowly getting a better idea on what I want to pursue in the future. Also doing some online tutoring on the side and hoping to get into a face-to-face job after I get my license.

Uni has made it hard to stay on top of hobbies but still occasionally reading and creating art! Not doing any extracurriculars now but wanting to get back into playing tennis at some point.

I'm currently in Year 12 studying QCE Physics, Chemistry, Methods, General English, Ancient History and Religion and Ethics. The externals are next Term (aghhh)! I plan on watching all the marvel movies (in order of release date) after externals, getting a job and turning 18 lol. My subjects are crazzzyyyyyy but we manage. I improved my methods grades this year and I'm proud of myself πŸ™‚

I graduated last year with a QCE and now, I am studying a Bachelor of Medical Science with entry into the Doctor of Medicine program. Currently, I am unfortunately studying anatomy, physiology, organic chem and public health. I mainly tutor HS students (VCE, HSC, WACE and QCE), coach debating and did work at a restaurant a while ago until I realised that I wasn't cut out for it πŸ˜† . I wish I did a sport like tennis but since I have to travel a bit to uni, I don't really do extra-curriculars, however, I do play a musical instrument in the QMO.

Right now in uni, its completely different to HS. Its much more chilled but I feel like this semester will completely lower my self-confidence. So please wish me good luck πŸ˜…. If anyone's interested, I recently finished watching Queen's Gambit (highly recomment) and Sherlock .

So far I'm finding Year 12 quite hectic and challenging, but I love my subjects, friends and teachers! I'm currently studying VCE English, Chemistry, Biology and Further Maths (with my favourite subject being Biology, despite enjoying them all). I also accelerated VCD (visual communication and design) over the last two years and absolutely loved it (despite the many tears shed over my folio and exam), and I also did Studio Arts in Year 11 but dropped it this year due to struggling with folio subject burnout. Next year I hope to study science of some sort, and I'm particularly interested in immunology and pharmacology (however, that might change, who knows)! πŸ˜„

      a year later

_sophiestudies_ Hi, I'm also accelerating VCE (3/4) this year so I haven't done any of the unit 1/2 content
I am actually so stressed with this decision so do you have any tips for accelerating?

I'm starting year 11 this year in the act, I originally picked a tertiary package doing human biology, chemistry, religion, maths methods and tertiary English. If my changes work out though I'll be doing human bio, biology, literature, religion and maths methods. If you haven't already guessed I love biology, and since I go to a catholic school I'm required to do religion in year 11 and English is mandatory whether its lit, tertiary English or accredited. If anyone got tips for these courses, I'd appreciate them so much. ACT system means that every assignment and test I do in both year 11 and year 12 counts towards my ATAR soooo gotta make sure I do well

Also starting year 11, kinda nervous... Friendship changes so much when you transition to the next year. Though I am excited for the subjects I picked this year, -Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Specialist and Methods and GE- I know that I have to pull my head together and work really hard. Anyone have any tips to deal with stress? I get easily stressed.. Wish me luck! πŸ˜ƒ

Gosh I maybe just realised I commented on this back in 2022 haha. How time flies.

Welp because its back up again, this year, I'm going into my second year of studying Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), majoring in Computer and Software systems. This year, I REALLY wanna join volleyball club, Elec Engo club and robotics club at uni, figure out how to manage my social life and uni life, move outta my parents house, get a better job/find an internship and prolly figure out the two minors I'm gunna do with my degree. I'm thinking robotics but idk, we'll see where the wind blows us lol.

P.S. To the year 12s this year: it may seem tough, but remember to enjoy what you can, because one the first day of uni, you'll almost put your school uniform on.
