Hey all, this is a long and confusing one.

I failed a Unit 3 course due to missing failing an alternate and not handing in a medical certificate on time, stupid I know.

On the 22/03/23 I sat my alternate sac for economics, which I received a 34% on, which meant I failed the SAC.

I failed to hand in the medical certificate because I was stressed with both school and work.

I was the unfortunate victim of leaving my sunroof open during a rainy night, where my workbook sat for 8 hours. The result was a workbook that was irreversibly damaged. That meant I had to complete all the work (including holiday homework) due to the teacher not regularly checking the coursework.

That stress lead to frequent migraines that were so extreme I couldn’t attend school.

From the lack of attendance I began to fall behind in other classes. My attendance was also very very low. (62% attendance in English was at the lowest point.)

I was really far behind in my media class and per VCAA rules, the teacher sent my family incomplete folio emails, the the month I march I received 5 of them.

However, I received a letter of incomplete coursework (final warning) from my economics teacher and it had to be completed within 4 days of that email being sent. As I did not see that email, I had no knowledge of that deadline.

On May 9, 54 days later. I received the ‘N’ result.

During the 54 days, no one at the school brought up the ‘deadline’. No one from the principal to random teachers asked about it.

After reviewing my options, I felt as if the school failed to breach their obligation of outlining work conditions correctly. I then wrote a letter, which I finished yesterday and at 3.30pm I informed the school of my intention to have an internal review.

Today was my internal review, I sent the VCE coordinator an email asking for a few policies and how they were implemented. When I walked in, we had a discussion for 30 minutes and both myself and the two head VCE coordinator decided that we weren’t going to agree. So I told them I wished to proceed with my internal review. They said that was the internal review and the next step is to have a talk with the principal, which they’ll organise.

In the “internal review” I kept on asking about the responsibility that the teachers have towards my interest:

  • I asked them about all the factors that were my absence and my number of VCE warnings. They then told me that she didn’t have to.
  • I asked about why I had to wait so long to learn about my ‘N’ they then said that the teacher was extending my deadline to help me finish the coursework (This was not disclosed to me.)
-When I brought up why the subschool/coordinators didn’t talk to me or my parents about not constantly failing to hand in my work, they said they tried to find me. But I was always away from migraines when they tried. I pointed out about how they were following up about attendance they said they were going to ask about economics.

Like what???

My question is am I going crazy or do I seriously have grounds?

I made a really stupid mistake which I understand. Surely they’re breaching something…

Cheers,
Dyl.

Don't try to redo all the work in a short period of time. Just explain to the teacher that you're behind because of the aforementioned reasons and they likely won't punish you. If you're behind, there is no reason to skip class purely to catch up on coursework. Taking that route is usually suicide because now you're struggling in all of your subjects instead of 1.

Also, who leaves their books in the car? I always put my folders inside my bag or inside my room.

However, I received a letter of incomplete coursework (final warning) from my economics teacher and it had to be completed within 4 days of that email being sent. As I did not see that email, I had no knowledge of that deadline.

Unless your internet didn't work, this is your fault. it is your responsibility to check your emails on a daily basis.

I asked about why I had to wait so long to learn about my ‘N’ they then said that the teacher was extending my deadline to help me finish the coursework (This was not disclosed to me.)

If your teacher hasn't talked to you about incomplete work, keep on doing it. Don't ignore it and do nothing until your teacher gets back to you.

I failed to hand in the medical certificate because I was stressed with both school and work.

Doesn't this take a maximum of 30 seconds to hand in? When I need to hand a form in, I give it to the dean of studies. This takes like 5 seconds. While I understand that you were struggling, remembering to hand the certificate in is a reasonable expectation.

The school's actions seem pretty typical. I can't see anything unusual in your post.

There are many other points which I haven't covered, but I don't think that you have any grounds.
