Hey everyone,

So my subjects as a year 11 in 2024:

English 1/2
French 1/2
Media 1/2
Music styles 1/2
Psychology 3/4
Music Performance 3/4

I wish all other year 11s the best of luck! (And of course everyone else that’s doing vce haha)
-Arielle 🙂

I'm doing English 1/2 as well... low key terrified lol
How was Psych 1/2? (I'm doing it next year)

Yeah English 1/2 not going to be fun... not my best + not my favourite subject...

Well I only did unit 2 from psych, but revising content from unit 1 on the brain. Unit 2 is like social cognition, perception. An assessment we did was we had to make a visual perception poster on Gestalt principles. Then, another assessment was that we had an investigation on taste perception, and then had to collate all the data into a research report. Those were really the main things.

Arielle I believe you are overexaggerating about how hard english 1/2 is. I came into year 11 this year from mainstream english whereas most of my friends were from enhancement and matched their grades, I found my texts of macbeth and in cold blood very enjoyable in fact. With pretty much minimal efforts, ie: memorising quotes 2-3 days before sacs and finishing all class work I averaged an A. Though it seems daunting at first english is merely a measure of how well you understand the concepts, and conveying the messages through sophisticated waffling during test conditions.

IceCrem hi there, thanks for your thoughts on English, here’s my perspective on English in year 10:

Memorising quotes was simple for me. You mentioned that without effort you got A’s, but doesn’t matter how hard I worked, highest for essays was a C+ this year for me, and for my oral I got a B. So for me this wasn’t impressive. Talking to my friends from year 11, I see that English will not get any easier.

Also, I was forced into doing English, because my school does not offer English language, and did not allow me to do it via virtual school Victoria (VSV). So, as you can see, I’m not looking forward to units 1/2 of English.

And, I will probably end up with a tutor, which is a bit annoying because from other subjects I easily got A’s.

Arielle Assuming you did the 1/2s for Psych and Music, how was the experience? Like how was the jump from doing normal subjects to doing VCE, especially with exams and crap?

Chibby well I did both units from music performance and unit 2 from psych. For me, it didn’t really feel like much of a jump as such, I got used to it pretty quickly haha. It’s just a slightly different attitude since these are already units, and you are aware that you are preparing for vce exams. 🙂

ayeh654 hey there, the best tip I can give you as a fellow year 11 is just study smart not hard haha. What subjects are you doing?

ayeh654 key tips from a year 12: don't overthink it, as year 11 is mainly just about learning, and seeing your areas of weakness that need to be improved on. grades don't matter significantly, so use this year to figure out study techniques that work for you!! on the holidays, do a few hours of revision here and there, which can significantly reduce stress around exams. practice questions and cue cards will probably be your best friend

ayeh654 Hey again, sorry that I didn't reply sooner haha. Had an awesome 2 weeks of holidays! Those are some nice choices for subjects, though demanding, but I'm sure you'll manage it!! The main goal I reckon will be to improve organisational skills, and to manage all the tasks that are thrown on! And reminds me that I still have psych homework booklet to do... 🙁 haha

Arielle Oh I'm so sorry 2023 wasn't a good year of English for you! It sucks when your efforts and results don't line up. We have a backlog of videos on our Youtube channel if that helps, and I'm happy to give some advice on the forum if you'd like to ask any questions about English 1/2!
