"Explain how the greenhouse effect contributes to climate change, and communicate why understanding this process is important for everyday decision-making."
Background Knowledge :
The greenhouse effect is a natural process where certain gases in Earth's atmosphere (like carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor) trap heat from the Sun. This trapped heat helps maintain Earth's temperature. However, human activities—such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation—have increased the concentration of these greenhouse gases, enhancing the greenhouse effect and causing global temperatures to rise. This contributes to climate change, leading to extreme weather events, sea level rise, and impacts on ecosystems and agriculture.
START OF ESSAY
Over the last three decades, humans have made large advancements in technology, and our world has undergone a rapid industrialization. However, in the last few decades, many scientists have identified an extremely dangerous side effect of this development - the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is a normal occurrence on earth, where certain gases in the atmosphere trap heat from the sun to maintain Earth’s temperature. However, many human actions have increased the amount of these gases, which in turn traps more heat, causing climate change, which is detrimental to our environment and human life itself.
As previously mentioned, the greenhouse effect is a natural occurrence. It is when gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and water vapor trap heat in our atmosphere. However human actions, such as the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation and an increase of cattle, all increase the amounts of these heat-trapping gases in our atmosphere causing temperature increases. This issue has become more prevalent in today’s society, as our population is increasing - leading to more construction, our reliance on gas and petrol is increasing and the promotion of overconsumption on social media- which leads to large scale manufacturing, all releasing fossil fuels into the atmosphere.
These effects are extremely detrimental to our environment, because even an increase of 1 degrees can have many hazardous effects on the environment. Increasing global climates causes extreme weather events, sea level rising, the destruction of marine ecosystems and impacts our agriculture. Rising sea levels, as caused by the melting ice caps, not only rids many animals such as Polar Bears of their habitat, but threatens to slowly consume land and impact other ecosystems, such as our coral reefs. The coral reefs are becoming bleached and dying, which means that several species are losing their homes, and dying out, causing an imbalance in our ecosystems. In addition, extreme weather events, such as cyclones and bushfires, not only affect the environment, but can be deadly to the human race as well, which is why the Greenhouse effects must be stopped.
There have been countless protests and conferences to address this issue, and many countries are seeing small progress, however more action must be taken, which is why everyone must thoroughly understand how global warming occurs, because currently everyone is contributing to this issue.
Some solutions include renewable energy, reusable items, and better public transport. The burning of non-renewable energy sources such as gas and coal contribute to a large amount of fossil fuel emissions, which is why everyone should start to incorporate the use of renewable energy sources such as Solar energy, Wind energy and Hydro energy into their daily lives. This should also be supported by the government, making these energy sources more affordable, especially during the cost of living crisis.
Furthermore, to further reduce the greenhouse effect, many companies should start reviewing their environmental impacts instead of merely their profits and begin producing long lasting, reusable and affordable products. This will not only reduce the emissions from manufacturing, but decrease the waste left from fast fashion. This can be further supported by social media influencers, who currently have much of the world in chokehold, as well as the government who can bring in policies that companies must legally adhere to.
Another fix that must be addressed by our government is more convenient public transport. They should invest in more employees, better routes and conditions as well as better accessibility to our public transport systems, in order to reduce the amount of fossils used by cars.
As a result of our society's rapid development, we have ignored the state of our environment, as our actions have caused an increase in the Greenhouse effect, which causes Global warming. This is the trapping of heat from gases such as methane, carbon dioxide and water vapor, which is sped up from the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. This causes rising sea levels, habitat loss, many negative impacts on ecosystems and wild weather patterns. However this can be reduced by swapping to renewable energy sources, using more sustainable and renewable products as well as using public transport. If we don’t recognise the causes of this issue now and act accordingly, our world will be thrown into chaos that humans will not be able to save.
