i asked chatgpt for a prompt and it gave me: As the sun dipped below the horizon, you stumbled across something buried in the forest — something no one was ever meant to find. From that moment on, nothing was the same.
Alex had always been enchanted by the forest beside his mother's quaint cottage, and every evening, as the cold blanket of dusk settled upon the horizon, he ventured out into the woods, determined to find out what lay beyond the trees and undergrowth. Tonight, however, something felt off. His mother had recently passed away, and the once warm, welcoming ambience of the forest had faded into a depressing stillness. The cold whisper of the wind was deafening against the silence, as if warning him not to come any closer. Alex began to think twice, to reconsider whether he should really enter, but he couldn't resist the curiosity that tugged at him, so he held his breath and ran inside.
The forest was dark, ominous and almost impossible to navigate, but this wasn't Alex's first time treading along these paths. He knew these woods like the back of his hand, and so despite his complete inability to see, Alex jogged with certainty. But suddenly, his foot got caught on an uneven patch of dirt, and he tripped over.
"Huh," Alex murmured, "that's weird. I swear that wasn't there before..."
Stumbling to his feet, he approached the disturbed earth, squinting so he could see it a bit more clearly. Unsure as to what it was, and with only one way to find out, he began to dig, burrowing with his hands until they struck something solid. Unearthing the foreign object, he discovered it was a small wooden box. Alex's stomach churned, what if there was something dangerous inside? Hoping for the best but preparing for the worst, he opened it.
The scent of old books hit his face like a slap, but it soothed him ever so slightly. Letting out a sigh, Alex looked into the tiny box. In it was a beautiful golden locket, shimmering in spite of the darkness, accompanied by a small, crumpled note. He unfolded it and strained his eyes to read it. It said:
"Alex. Listen, I know that every single night, you would run off into the forest and go looking for things that weren't really there. And if you are reading this, I would assume that you're still at it. Something you probably didn't know, however, was that I used to be just like you. All day, every day, I would be outside in this very forest, venturing into the unknown. And the advice I have for you, is to follow your dream. Keep searching and discovering, keep looking for the extraordinary in the ordinary, because frankly, this world would be a boring place without minds like yours. I'll see you again one day, Alex. Until then, keep this safe with you."
Alex took the locket out of the box and unclasped it. Inside, was a photo of a young Alex and his mother, holding hands, walking together in the forest. Tears welled up in his eyes. He clutched the locket tightly in his arms and dropped down onto the forest floor, his mind a rollercoaster of emotions. Alex wasn't sure what he was going to do in life, how things would turn out for him. But he knew one thing. He knew that he would never give up, that he would keep going, for her. For his mother.
"Goodbye, Mum," Alex whispered, "I won't let you down."
A bittersweet smile spread across his face.
"I love you."
