  • I'm also wondering if I should do the macrob test for yr 10, but I just revise content I learn in class especially maths. I also read a lot and practise my writing and timing myself. Not sure about tips but, if you don't get in its not the end of the world 🙂

    • I recon you should cos if you don't you might regret it. But this is not a do or die situation. You'll still be going to school regardless.
Yep I was also rejected for yr 9 sehs.
Honestly about studying maybe going to a tutoring centre like henderson or jac. Or if not then just really focusing on stuff you learn at school?

Heyy so I did the sehs exam for year 9 in 2023 and its not accurate but I think 1 in 5 students make it into a sehs school, I assume. If you are currently in an Accelerated class I highly recommend to pay attention to class, or just in normal class.
My strong suit is Maths so I got superiors in Mathematics and Numerical Reasoning, but I flonked Reading comprehension with below average :/ and average in Verbal reasoning. One thing I highly recommend is to bring in an analogue watch as that will help you keep track with time as when i did the test there was no timer but a watch they showed. Or if you didn't bring one then write the time at the top of your paper to track time. Unfortunately I do not have a success story but I recommend to put your subjects that you are not good at as priority compared to me who did not. The content that you learn in year 8 should be similar to the content shown in the exam, but as a reference, this is what should be covered in the test. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fTbAb4AxustM6qokFTbVDklU15heTrnE/view?usp=sharing
It is good to look for practise tests but leave that later on like 2-3 months before the exam that will happen in June I think. I found that finding 2nd hand textbooks that covers year 8-9 content was helpful as I got 2 superiors in the maths tests.
For your Reading Comprehension, there were fiction texts and non-fiction, and also a poem and a cartoon which could be found in physical newspapers. I recommend Reading Anything that you can find at home or just a variety of books to help you in that. In Verbal reasoning, it was a mixture of analogies, vocabulary meanings and the computerical questions like all if all KEYS are REYS and some REYS are LEYS... Definitely try and find similar resources with questions like that cause that is what will definitely be on the VR test.
Also to expand your vocabulary I highly recommend vocabulary.com as that helped me with expanding my vocab and such.
Time management wise may be different for everyone, but I did the Pomedoro method which is 25 mins of studying then a 5 min of break which is NOT being on technology. But definitely when I study I take a sip of water and look somewhere else that is not my study books when I need a breather. Definitely don't worry too much about studying because most of the content in the exam will be from school.
Very common mistakes that students make is not reading the question properly. So definitely when you are answering questions make sure to not skim the question but understand and read the question properly.
For Reading Comprehension read the questions first then read the text as you roughly remember what to remember with answering the questions.
Probably try not to listen to music while studying as that will help you be in the mood when actually in the exam room.
I read on the official Macrob comment section that you should aim for over 85% for each test to maximise your chances of making it in.
And definitely this is not a do or die test, there are many pathways to get where you want, and there are other chances for year 10 and 11 to do the macrob test again.
      I hoped this helps 😉

Refresh page and try again. I've made it unrestrictive 🙂

Try the Victorian Selective school exam Practice tests. They have all 4 tests and should be fairly easy to find online. Tell me if you can't find it and try it out.

My friend did Qs and got 50% scholarship to Haileybury. My other friend got 75% scholarship to Haileybury with no tutoring but extensive self studying and reading. Idk how...

So I went to James An which is a good place for practice tests but its a bit overwhelming especially if you are only going to be there for two terms when the test will be around June. So I HIGHLY recommend paying attention to classes especially for maths as the content that was in the sehs was fairly year 8 standard. Revise what you learnt in class and ask for extensions. For Reading Comprehension and Verbal Reasoning definitely expand your vocabulary by reading and reading articles when you can. If you don't know a word, search it up. I definitely recommend vocabulary.com. Its free and has a lot of study thingos you can do.
Also for RC expand your text reading like read autobiographies, non-fiction, articles, the news, and definitely read poems to get used to the language used because definitely in the test it will show at least one poem i assume.
If you want to learn ahead on what was in the maths sehs test borrow textbooks from City Libraries or just any library and focus on: Number, Algebra, Measurement, Geometry, Statistics and Probability.
Honestly for me my strong suit is maths so I aced Mathematics and Numerical Reasoning (superiors both), but I got below average in Reading Comprehension and average in Verbal Reasoning. For writing definitely do an introduction and aim for 2-3 body paragraphs and a conclusion. Use time wisely as I highly recommend revising your work. For creative writing, aim to have a complete story from beginning to end with no cliff hangers. Try and put a variety of figurative language in your narrative as that will boost your writing, but don't add too much that your writing is uncomfortable to read. The time that I got to write both the persuasive and narrative was 40 mins altogether (20 mins each).
Its best to start sooner than later so start reading anything from the news to a spectrum of books to get a feel of how to write better and such. Hoped that helped.

      • Hi everyone, I'd love to know what math content would be covered on the macrob test for the entry into year 10 and roughly how the test went. Hard? Easy? Is the content covered at school or do I need tutoring?
Also how the reading comprehension and Verbal reasoning went because I suck at English for some reason -_-

I went to James An TT8 honestly don't worry if you get 50% because most of the times I score between 40% to 70%. But if you do want to get better definitely revise each test and what you could improve on. But overall a lot of the James An content won't appear on the sehs test. I would highly recommend revising content at school and asking for extensions from teachers because the sehs test will cover a lot of the content from school.
This worked for me but gl on your test. I'm rooting for you 🙂

The best thing you could do is find out what content you need to learn then finding physical resources like textbooks like going to libraries then learning from there.
For RC and VR expand your vocabulary like using vocabulary.com (highly recommend).
Content in Mathematics: Number, Algebra, Measurement, Geometry, Statistics and Probability
        Hope that helped.
But defs finding physical textbooks is what I did for two superiors: Maths and NR
