Owlbird83phrazle I found this super cool when i learnt yesterday! Genericide is when a trademarked brand becomes too widely used by the population to refer to the generic object and so they lose the trademark. So popular brands don't want their name to become too widely used. According to a website Thermos, Teflon, Aspirin, Zipper, Pilates, Escalator, and Cellophane all used to be trademarked brand names that were lost because they became too popular.
As of yesterday, I had no idea, and I think it's awesome. When a trademarked brand gets commonly used as a synonym for the generic item, the phenomenon known as "genericide" occurs. Therefore, well-known companies want to prevent their brand name from becoming genericized. A website claims that the trademarks for Thermos, Teflon, aspirin, zippers, pilates, escalators, and cellophane were abandoned since the products had become so ubiquitous.
