JMSS 2024 Entry
Heyyy,
Has anyone got a offer or interview call from JMSS yet?
John Monash Science School caters to students who enjoy science whether that be in technology, physics or any other field. If you aren't content about going into science then it probably isn't going to be the right place for you. I've heard of people saying they didn't like the school because it's heavily science based (which is very dumb because it literally is a school focused on educating students about science fields). The teachers there as well assume the students have a passion for the sciences so for people who don't want to, it isn't a suitable school. All I'm trying to say is that even though it is a selective school, the students that will benefit most from going there and actually enjoying the learning environment is students that actually enjoy science.
I mean there are many students that sit the entrance exam just for the sake that it is a selective school but in the long run, if you don't plan on actually pursuing it, it will be worthless.
Ye i got it

Congratulations everyone who received the offer. Can someone who received the offer guide me how the interview process works and what made you stand out in the crowd? My son is applying for next year and just wondering if I should start doing something now.
ind191 For the interview process, I believe that you should be yourself. By that I donât mean to be completely relaxed. Some nervousness is fine. However, you should show that you have a true passion for science through your answers. During the group activities, it is recommended that you listen actively to your group members, ask questions and try to be to inclusive. This year, my group and I had to use different materials to create a path for the ball to reach the other side. To stand out in these types of activities, you should be optimistic even if the ball didnât reach the other side. This shows that you have a growth mindset, which is a key factor in the selection process from what I have heard. In group activities, you should take initiative. But, do not speak over anyone else and make sure everyone feels heard. In the actual interview, the interviewer asked me about extracurriculars, career plans, grades and how I spend my weekends. It is important that you donât show off and give realistic answers. For example, donât say âI study all day during the weekend.â Instead, you should seem like you have a life outside of school. For career plans, it is recommended that itâs science related. We also had to submit a resume. The interviewer will look at your resume while interviewing you and will ask questions about your resume. Make sure you are prepared. Try include everything in your resume, even if it isnât science related. The interviewer will also ask you about any current science related issue that youâre interested in, your favourite scientist and why you like them. Make sure you are well prepared for this. The interviewer will ask why you want to join John Monash. For this question, itâs extremely important that you donât talk bad about the school your going to right now. Instead, you could say âAlthough, my current school has an excellent learning environment, I think John Monash will challenge me and help me pursue my passions for science.â I didnât do any prior coaching for the entrance test, but I did have Hendersonâs interview coaching session and advice from a year 10 friend. Donât take my advice too strong, because you should be yourself!

For the one on one interview, I think just being able to talk a lot about your passions and being friendly and open is a big factor. Like DJC said, you should just be yourself and try not to be nervous. It is good to have a lot of extracurriculars in your resume because the school wants all-rounded students that have other passions besides science and schoolwork, so many sports or clubs that you've joined should be added. It depends on the interviewer, but my interviewer went through my entire CV and flipped through all my reports and awards with me so I could add anything that I wanted to. Like when he was looking at my report, I added that I was really proud of how well I did because I worked really hard and wanted to do my best and I'm glad that it paid off.
Even if you don't do a lot of science related activities, you are still able to spin this to help you when answering questions. You could say something like "I haven't been given a lot of opportunities within science at my school and I want to go to John Monash so I am to be pushed to involve myself in more science activities and be in an environment where students share the same passions as me."
During my group activities, I was the one that tried to get other people to talk or asked them for their ideas to seem proactive and show leadership but also not overshadow the other students by simply saying my own ideas. Simple things like saying "What do you think?" or "Do you agree or have any other ideas?" can go a long way, especially when other people don't seem to be talking.
Hope that helped!
