  • Heyo!

As of writing, I'm totally not being bombarded with assessments rn. I'm not even exaggerating. 🥲🥹

There's so much to memorise, from anatomy to physics. Its never ending. In RADI1184, a skills assessment is done at the end of the semester. We're expected to remember all the positioning, x-ray types and pathology because we have no idea on what we're getting on the day. I've never done something like this before, so its quite scary to say the least.

    Assessments (as of now):
RADI1184: Image critique paper and skills assessment.
    RAD1125: Group poster
OPNS2324: Lab report and set of physics questions
BIOL2480: small quizzes and workshop assignments

Anyways, some funny things happened whilst I was at uni. When I was in physics class, there was a bug that landed on my friend's worksheet. So I flicked it away and it went on the seat in front of me. Realising that it was really close to my other friend. I rolled up a sheet of paper and started to wack my friend to alert him of the bug. Him thinking I dropped my pen, he started to look all over. Not seeing the huge as bug right next to him. All this occurred in front of our professor. 😭 He just went on w/ the lecture like nothing happened.

Have a good week beep boopers!

  • 👍 It's great to see that you have a clear idea of your career goals at such a young age. Keep working towards your passion!

Regarding becoming a pilot, it's important to note that while obtaining an ATAR may not be necessary to become a pilot, it can be beneficial for pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Aviation. However, there are other pathways available, such as VET qualifications or Diploma of Aviation, which can lead to a career as a pilot. 🛫

If you decide to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Aviation, some recommended (and transferable skills) subjects include Mathematics, Physics, English, Chemistry, and Biology. You may want to consider universities such as Swinburne or Edith Cowan University, which offer Bachelor's degrees in Aviation in Victoria. 🎓

It's also worth checking out resources such as the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) website to learn more about the requirements and process to become a pilot in Australia. And if you're interested in starting your aviation training, enrolling in a Diploma of Aviation once you turn 15 (you may already be 15) would be an excellent way to get started. ✈️

    Have a safe flight!

    Sup dudes

Missed the week 4, 5 and 6 update bc my time management sucks

There was this coding assignment that was also draining, so heads up to anyone who wants to do Engineering, especially year 11's and 12's, learn Python. It'll save hours :')

Aside from that, everything is kinda chill. I need a better note-taking method for lectures and its so easy to fall asleep after the first hour. It mid-sem break (for a week) right now so I've been trying to catch up on lectures.

With math, the basics of matrices make sense, but whatever I learnt in that last lecture didn't. Tried doing that second worksheet for Matrices and I'm so lost. I've got this whole plan on notion but oh well, we'll see how it goes.

Life update wise, I got a retail job so that's pretty awesome and its been going pretty awesome so far.

    That's really about it haha.

    Peace out,

  • Term 1 just ended and although I don't feel great about my grades, there's always the opportunity to improve next term. Since I don't have much to comment on besides my grades, I'd like to do a brief reflection on each of my subjects.

Digital Solutions: I really enjoyed doing the subject. It was unique as it offered students the opportunity to code and gain practical experience instead of the mundane textbook and notebook work that most subjects have.
For my formative assessment, I received 15/20. Although this was tied for the lowest grade in my class, my teacher was very supportive and she helped me identify weaknesses in my assessment. Hopefully I can get a better grade next term.
English: This term's topic was about imperialism, and accordingly I analysed the novel The Secret River and the film Avatar. After initially getting a shocking grade of 16/25, fortunately my work was moderated up to 18/25. My teacher explained how my literary essay was too recount-heavy and lacked critical analysis, so I will try to implement the feedback and improve my grade next term.
Chemistry: My results this term were a huge shock to me, as I view myself as more of a math/science student. I did struggle in some key areas, but I managed to get help and eventually was able to understand all of the content. During the exam, my biggest weakness was time management, and as the clock ticked down I scrambled to write answers down. My mark was 46/60, and unsurprisingly most of the lost marks were due to me rushing or being careless.
Physics: I feel like this term was a warm-up term, because my whole class managed to grasp the content relatively easily. I received 19/20 for my data test which got converted into 10/10 because the marking guide stipulated that >90% was 10/10, >80% was 9/10, >70% was 8/10 and so on. This was somehow the highest grade in my class, as almost everyone failed to answer a trick question worth 2 marks.
Math Methods: I understood the content fairly easily, but made a single silly error in the exam which cost me 2 marks. I ended up getting 18/20 in the exam, and it had the same marking guide as Physics(so the grade on my report card was listed as 9/10). I am really proud of the grade I achieved in my assignment, as I diligently and tirelessly worked on it while asking the teacher and peers for help. I ended up getting 19/20 for the assignment.
Specialist Math: Vectors and proofs were two of the topics in which I struggled the most(this seems to be the case for most people doing specialist). This time I triple-checked each answer before the end of the exam, and I got a completely undeserved 20/20. I did bomb the assignment, receiving 16/20 due to my nonexistent evaluation and dubious analysis throughout the assignment. Since the assignment was worth more than the exam, it dragged my grade down and I cannot truthfully say that I am happy with my specialist grade.

And that wraps up the commentary for Term 1. See you all next term!

  • Hi everyone,

It has been a while since my last update, and a lot of my future ideas and goals have changed. In fact, I think for the first time in my life, I may have found the answers to a lot of things I've been confused about. Maybe I'll start with what I know now and go from there.

I will pursue a research career and become an academic in physics.
I will work in experimental particle physics.
I will do my postdoc overseas.

Those 3 sentences took way too long to solidify, but now I finally have learnt who I want to become and what I want to be. It has taken so long to make this statement; I feel like it is the stigma and stereotypes faced in physics. Maybe it's my insecurity that female academics in physics are rare and that it is very hard to break past this barrier, maybe it is the lack of awareness that research in physics exists, maybe it is the competitive nature of becoming an academic, maybe its people saying I can never get there, or maybe it's all the above and more.

    But I don't care anymore.
I don't care what others think.

Over the summer, I worked on two major research projects, one for the SABRE South experiment for ARC Dark Matter Particle Physics and one for ARC TMOS in optics. What both projects taught me is that a research career is really for me. The particle physics project in particular, taught me that the experimental particle physics group is where I belong. The question now is, do I stay at Unimelb for postgrad or do I look elsewhere? As I've learnt, the answers will reveal themselves with time. I'm investigating a range of EPP experiments around the world, more dark matter experiments, neutrino oscillation experiments and collider experiments. I've also been elected as the new president for PSS, and that brought more clarity and sanity into my life.

This is not an "I want" phase anymore, this is an "I will" and I am going to get there.

I've never seen things so clearly before.
It is like looking through crystal-clear water,
And the reflection of an endless, unbounded sky bouncing off the surface.

They say the sky's the limit,
But I need to aim higher.

    It's time to break free from the chains that hold me to the ground;
And run into the unknown that awaits,
    Does it scare me?
    No, not anymore.
    In fact, I'm excited,
To jump into the world that has been waiting patiently for me.

This is the end of today's update, an update much needed for this journal.
I'll come back in the future to provide more thoughts.
For now, it's time for me to get ready to hit the ground running.

    • HEY Y'ALL!

It's been a hot minute since I've posted hehe. I've started uni for about three weeks now. Just a refresher I'm currently doing bachelor of science (medical radiations) at RMIT. Lemme tell youse. Uni. Is. So. Much. Work. I feel like as soon as I finish my work, something else pops up. The amount of anatomy I have to learn is astronomical!!!! And not to mention the assessments that being bombarded left and right. Travel was shock to the system. I have to wake up super early and all my first classes that I have in the morning start at 8:30. Can you imagine trying to learn physics at 8:30 on a mon? Its rough. Getting there is 2 hrs and going home is also the same time. 😭 Labs can be a lot, when I'm trying to process and learn how to xray. My stomach is rumbling and I'm hella drained by the end of the week. Sorry for the rant beep boopers, lol. Uni has been a lot for me as you can tell. 😂

The subjects that I'm currently doing rn are:
      BIOL2480: Introduction to Human Biosciences
      RADI1115: Foundations of Professional Practice
      RAD1184: Medical Imaging 1
      ONPS2343: Medical Radiations Physics 1

I'm currently doing ok in bio and foundations of prof prac (this is my fav one). Doing not so ok in medical imaging and medical radiations.

Hope you have a good weekend!

      • Week 2
Damn, another week flies by. Wow.

This week was pretty chill and it wasn't too hard.

        Math
My math subject is lowkey giving me a hard time, because I barely passed year 11 methods :'). We have worksheets we have to complete, and the best 8 outta 12 count toward our final mark. We also have an exam but idk when that is lol.
I'm not really sure if I'm allowed to chuck the questions I'm having trouble with so I won't, but there are STEM support services and stuff so I might go check it out. I also learnt what my tutor's name was and she's such a nice lady.

        Engineering Design n Professional Practice
We have a reflection sheet due, on like our group skills and stuff. Its weighted 20% of our grade n stuff which is pre alright. Need to edit n submit it tho haha. We're also building a bridge prototype and we created our groups, so really looking forward to the design aspect of the bridge.

        Coding
Its going pretty chill, our lectures are like Q n A sessions and I have to watch 10 videos before Monday. We've started our assignments and its due in week 6. Its already giving me errors, but the relief when it gives you a different error from before hits diff dude, like if you get it, you get it.

        Physics
Been keeping up with textbook readings, and so far its just Unit 3 Physics and Unit 4 Methods revision so its not too bad. Our tutor is pretty chill and the final exam is multiple choice so that pretty awesome! That's really about it lol, with weekly questions so yeah. Idk if we get graded on the weekly questions tho, need to ask my tutor.

        Have an awesome weekend,
        -jinx_58

Hey so, coming from someone who's done both sociology and psychology I thought I'd give you some advice if you're still considering between the two subjects

Psychology: I am not a science orientated person, prefer humanities any day, however psychology is simple enough that it's easy to pick up (I picked it up as a 3/4 last year without doing the 1/2), however I would say it's a lot of scientific content you will have to learn there will be quite a bit of biology however it's interesting and relates to everyday life scenarios (like how your body deals with stress, sleep etc.) It also has a lot of niches and small things to remember but as it is a lot of applying as well as remembering it's not too difficult of a subject. It's also amazing if you like writing because the questions are mainly like dot point sentences explaining how processes occur and the exam has 40 MC which is beautiful! However the exam last year was very difficult but because this year and next year (For you) will be a relatively new study design the exam shouldn't be too hard and you should be able to get a good study score

Sociology: I found this subject so much more interesting than any subject I had done throughout schooling, like it made me want to do a Bachelor of Arts. Like every topic in sociology is so interesting and relevant to today's society, I found it was interacting with all my other subjects in some shape or form and was just a very holistic subject. HOWEVER, though it was a fabulous subject to learn, it was not great in terms of assessment, many people are naive coming into the subject thinking it's easy, it scales down, remember scaling is based on the competitiveness of the cohort you are against not the subject itself! Sociology has lots of content, like lots, there are like 15 case studies, examples and quotes you have to know about almost every dot point it's also very difficult in terms of assessment. You have to write long definitions and explain answers very quickly in limited time, so I would say far more interesting than psych but lots more work don't underestimate it! It does unfortunately scale down by a lot too, so just be wise in choosing.

I think ultimately choose what would suit you best, these are my experiences of the 2 subjects, so don't take my opinions as what your experience will be like but I just thought I should give you a taste of what each subject is like so that your not shocked if you choose one of them.

        • Yolk15 Yes, we love the neurodivergent representation.
I want to go into Early Childhood Education (hence why I work with the foundation students). I think I want to be a primary teacher, I really enjoy working with children in that context (and my mentor last year - the teacher of the foundation class I worked with - said that I was a natural with them which really instilled a lot of confidence).
I know that my subjects don't really reflect that but my school is kind of new (it opened in 2019) so it doesn't offer very many subjects, especially with staff shortages, so I kind of just picked the ones that I could find ways to relate to ECE or that I knew I would enjoy.

        • TnGn74 especially if it is not taught well

Fortunately, my physics teachers are really good (one of them wrote past vcaa physics exams). In 2022, while there were only 2 physics class, 4 students got SSs of above 40 which is wild.

        • Yolk15 Psychology was probably my 2nd favorite subject in VCE. Really enjoyed how applicable it was to real life and honestly found it much more interesting than Biology. I would also recommend having a look at VCE Geography. Don't really need the 1/2 for Geography (or at least I didn't do it and still was my best subject). Found it was a good mix of Enviro ish stuff as well as Human Geography and impacts.

        • For Global Politics I found last year that subscribing to just a few daily emailed updates was a good way to keep up with the news. I signed up for UN News and Foreign Policy Morning Brief, Editors' Picks and China Brief (since my school did China for Power in the Asia-Pacific). I used to have a look at these in the morning before class, and it kept it digestible.

          • lil N
Chemistry Unit 3 is pre chill, but Unit 4 requires you to be on the ball and a lot of memorisation. Practice questions and drawing diagrams out multiple times should help

Physics, unit 3 calculations go from linear to quadratic and it becomes slightly more complex to apply the right equations to the questions. Unit 4 really requires a lot more understanding (except topic 3, you can kinda memorise some things) than Units 1&2.

U3&4 Methods is just building upon Unit 1&2 methods so if you get the basics, you should be right.

I didn't do spesh or bio so I hope someone will answer that one.

Feel free to ask more questions,
            -jinx_58

          • Howdy Howdy peeps!

For those of you who don't know, I completed QCE Year 12 last year with a 91.75 ATAR. Here's my year 12 journey journal: https://discussion.atarnotes.com/d/7214-the-expedition-through-qce-for-a-good-atar-jinx-58

Now, from the 27th of Feb, I'll be studying Engineering at the Queensland University of Technology. I got in through the early offer scheme, so it was a nice peace of mind before the ATAR's came out. I actually have a better title this time for my journey journal so that's also pretty awesome haha.

In first semester, we all take the basic engineering subjects, then in second semester we choose our major- or minor - specific subjects. I don't entirely have a clue as to what major I wanna do so we vibin'.

            My subjects:
EGB101: Engineering Design and Professional Practice
            EGB102: Fundamentals of Engineering Science
EGB103: Computing and Data for Engineers
MZB125: Introductory Engineering Mathematics (The easier math because I only did methods and not spesh)

Regarding my timetable, I have a day off on Thursdays so that's pretty awesome. I also have days where classes end at 6pm :') 😳

            O-Week
I've signed up for events and jazz so that's cool, some lectures and I'm planning on joining Volleyball club (if there is one) and book club.

            Other life things:
I learnt how to catch a bus for the first time last week so that was pretty awesome
I've got a casual job, once a week at Kumon
Still applying for other retail jobs n jazz
Maccas rejected me like 5 times (I think I'm overqualified lol)
            Coles also rejected me haha
A bunch of places rejected me lol

Starting up new habits and stuff is so hard. I've been trying to pick back up on Python coding through this app called Mimo (its awsm you should try it), and trying to exercise somewhat consistently (at home, too broke for the gym lol), and practice keyboard, and its proving to be a challenge, especially exercising haha.

I'm not sure how busy uni'll get so I'm not sure how regularly I'll update this journal😅

Song of the week: Tell Me I'm Alive - All Time Low

            Peace out,
            -jinx_58

              [ 15.02.2023 ]
It's week 3 of school and it does not feel like it at all. I haven't been grinding as much as I would like to but I've been doing the work. So I found out that my first Algo SAC is in 2 weeks and I started freaking out cuz it's worth 50% of unit 3 SACs apparently and why didn't they tell us we had a SAC before I asked them? IDK! WHY DIDN'T THEY!? apart from that, algo is actually a very fun subject, i really like the content and it's very absorbable stuff. easy o get a hang of

Anyway, English is already killing me, I don't want to do it, I want to drop it. The first sac is only worth 7% and I'm alr so screwed how am I going to survive the rest of the year? ahhhhhhhhhh

Moving on to spesh... idek if i need to say anything. i think doing spesh is a bad idea, i want to drop it, i think i suck, i didn't know spesh 3/4 was going to be this bad. the content is fine but they gave us a rational functions quiz and it was cooked. they frickin Gordon-Ramsay-ed the quiz like the smartest kid I know got a 75%, like just IMAGINE the smartest kid who always gets a 100 get a 75, JUST IMAGINE. I am horrified, my teacher hasn't marked it yet and I don't know if it's good or bad, but it is what it is. Let's see how the rest of the year plays out. 🙂

Chem is actually not as bad as I thought and i feel like i should put in more effort in it than spesh, ik spesh is so freaking rewarding but like even if i get a 30 it'll prolly scale to 40 and feel like i won't do that well even if i try hard. if i put in the same amount of effort in chem i think i could manage a relatively good score. also, chem tuition or self-learning the topic before class really helps, doing them beforehand reinforces the content when you redo it in class andddd the teachers will like you more if you participate in class. I learned to NOT NEGLECT relationships with people -> friends AND teachers last yr cuz it will make you happier and feel more awake, at least for me, talking to people makes me feel alive. Like i would literally sleep for 12 hours and still be tired so i need to have words coming out of my mouth to be able to feel remotely like a human being.

Physicsssssss. holy mother of god! I dreaded physics last year like idk what it was but like every time i walked into class it was like entering a battlefield with my brain. i did not understand a single thing! but this yr tho... i love my teacher!!! He's so freaking good! like everything that comes out of his mouth makes sense and I feel like this is a bit unusual for physics teachers -> HIS DRAWINGS LOOK GOOD. you can distinguish what he is drawing, that's all i have to say, like if he draws a car, it looks like a bloody good car with headlights, a windshield and the thing at the front that looks like a mouth. I LOVE PHYSICS!

as if i didn't have year 12 to take care of, i have a leadership position that organises a lot of our school events and since Valentine's day was yesterday, the co-captain and I had been planning it for a good 2 months cuz our school usually goes full-out. it was also extra stressful with just the two of us as we haven't accepted anyone to join the club yet. 💀 yesterday was actually chaotic and stressfull but im glad that's over phew

yes so those are all of my subjects updates so far, ik i word-vomited this whole post but I'm tired and this week was freaking tiresome. tbh last two weeks were worse w swimming carnival, PD day, photo day and assembly (im on the av team lol istg im not a total nerd). since i'm ac ouple of weeks in, i'll do an ss expectation update:

              Eng: 30
              Phys: 40
              Chem: 35
              Spesh: 30
              Algo: 35
(at this rate i'm not getting my parents' money)

Anyway hope your first couple of weeks went well!
              Signing out!

              • Yolk15
Psychology is my absolute favourite subject, definitely recommend! also if you end up picking sociology I'd be interested to know how it goes because I almost regret not choosing it 🙂

                • Hello! My name is Luna, and I am a year 12 student studying VCE. I had a VCE journal that I started towards the end of 2022, which recounted the last couple of months of my year 11 journey, but I decided we needed to start afresh as I’m sure there are plenty of things coming up this year that I would like to keep a memento of.

This year I will be doing English language, chemistry, general maths (finally dropped psych!), maths methods, and Japanese second language. I finished biology last year with a raw 39.

My goals for this year are simple, and definitely less ambitious than last years:

                  1. I’m aiming for an 80 ATAR. I’d like to do a bachelor of nursing at Monash which requires a 77, and the same course from other unis requires much lower. Hence, an 80 will give me the freedom of having options. 🙂
                  2. I’d like all of my study scores to be in the 30s… which means I need to work on methods a lot… (crying rn)
                  3. I want to have fun and work on my mental health. It’s year 12, there are going to be so much fun and exciting stuff happening, I don’t want to be studying 25/8 or let my mental illnesses prevent me from doing the things I love.

This is honestly a scary year, I can’t believe I’m nearly done with highschool but I am also excited to get into the next chapter of my life. To the class of ‘23, good luck and have fun!

                  Holiday Recap
Gonna be honest, I‘ve taken the holidays really chill. I finished school in late November so I got a bit of my holiday homework done before I got bored and decided to chill out for most of December. In January I procrastinated my holiday homework, but I’m going interstate really soon so I’m on a countdown now and hope to get at least 95% of my holiday homework done before I leave. (We’ll find out…)

Do I regret my decisions? Always! But it’s too late now! <3

                  Week 1 Over
I don’t plan on doing weekly updates since nothing much comes up per week anyways, but since it’s the first week of school I reckon that’s enough of an event.

First week wasn’t that bad, actually. Quite uneventful but really chill. God bless free periods ❤️

General: since I switched to General halfway through the holidays, I hadn’t done any of the work so I was really behind. Fortunately, I’ve been able to catch up enough that I should be on track by next week. I’m really enjoying General actually, it’s been so long since I’ve done maths that I understand pretty easily and have fun doing. Such a change of pace compared to methods, and it’s a very welcome one.

Methods: I don’t hate methods, but it’s not my favourite. I’m not necessarily behind, but every chapter is just a bore and I’m finding that I’m not putting as much effort into it as I should. I am expecting it to be in my bottom 2, but I also don’t want to slack off and not put my best into it because I know I’ll regret it. Also, I was one of the top students in methods last year and my ego would hurt badly if I get knocked down. 💀 Please, god of motivation, help me. 🙏

Chemistry: I love chemistry. It’s my favourite subject and I will happily do chapter questions any day. This week has been fun for chem, I have a wonderful teacher and I’m so excited for the upcoming year because she loves chem as much as I do and it’s nice to have someone with the same passion. I’m trying to get a few chapters ahead now, since I found that I don’t like writing up my notes as the teacher explains the content. I much prefer using class time as a way to revise.

Japanese: I also enjoy Japanese a lot, but it is a roller coaster of emotions. I think that people are expecting me to do well in Japanese, which is nice that they believe in me, but I’m not really aiming for top marks. I study Japanese because I love Japanese culture and history and media. Unfortunately I can’t really talk about how much I love anime in a VCAA exam. :/

English language: I have a new teacher and he’s also wonderful. I was scared he wouldn’t be but he clearly knows the content well. I forgot to mention it in my introduction, but I am trying for a high-ish score in English language. For no reason other than my old teacher believed that I could do well, and I just wanna show her that I can. I very much enjoy englang. I’ve always been decent at English but it was never a subject I ever thought was, or could be, ‘fun’. Englang proved me wrong.

Well, some basic goals I wanna get done:

                  • work on methods, even if I get questions wrong and want to give up, I refuse to be defeated by some stupid numbers
                  • catch up on general, I don’t think I’ll have trouble with this one but you never know
                  • get ahead in chem

Well, I hope everyone’s had a wonderful week/couple of days at school. Good luck in 2023!

Thank you for replying to my post,
I'm actually born with a Japanese background with both of my parents being Japanese and also went to a Saturday school just to undertake VCE Japanese second language, So to answer your question, I'm pretty fluent in Japanese.

In my opinion, you don't really have to be "fluent" in Japanese in order to take this subject since there are other parts of the course where you can get marks like listening, reading and writing. The oral components may sound pretty complicated but it was even nervous for me as well.

I didn't use Anki to study but I did use the VCE study design to help me understand what the requirements were to take this subject.

I would say that VCE Japanese would be equivalent to N5-N4 but I'm not 100% sure since they're both pretty different.

Everything inside the Japanese study design is what the VCE assessors would be looking for so the 200 kanji that are 'expected to know' are required for VCE Japanese second language. It would be better if you knew more kanji other than the ones listed but those ones are the only ones that are compulsory to remember and to use in your responses for your SACs + final written exam.

*Tip:You should also try to remember all the text types and their layouts for your essays (sakubunn) since they would come up on your SACs and your final exam 🙂

I hope this response was helpful!
                  Anyways, good luck!!!
