  • frog_of_spades Thank you ♥️

We’re all at different stages right now because two new students in my class have picked it up without 1/2. Some haven’t even finished brainstorming, but one of my classmates already finished their outcome 1 final. I’m currently finished with my trials, just need to take two more photos or so, then scan & print out. Our critique is on the first week back from school.

    • frog_of_spades hi! investigative journalism is super cool, and also the field of journalism i am interested in!!

i think it's important to remember in this day and age that direct written forms of journalism aren't as popular as they were 2 decades ago, due to the likes of social media, streaming media online (spotify, youtube), making the news more accessible. and monash definitely takes this into account with their course, as there is not so much a focus on audio/broadcasting journalism, but units tend to lean towards those forms. this isn't a discouragement by any means, as you should keep in mind that prior to the broadcast or audio being recorded, there needs to be written. written will always be important, and that will never change. what is important that you also diversify your skillset, thus broadcasting and audio journalism, as well as documentaries etc being offered at monash.

i would assume written skills are taught. i am apart of mojo news (student run news at monash) and there is an emphasis on writing skills and interviewing skills from the outset, so even as a first year student who is yet to practice journalism in their classes, i get to do so outside of the class environment.

hope that helps a little bit, and sorry for the yap 😭

      • kayyyy hi! i (sorta) do media and comms at uni, but i major in journalism at monash (1st year).

it is quite similar to media and comms besides some core units relating to the media which you need to take. i think monash has state of the art facilities- broadcasting studio, audio equipment, cameras, etc. the course is structured so you can gain practical work and build a portfolio.

monash also has mojonews, a student run news portal which i am newly apart of, and also helps in building a portfolio.

unimelb in relation to media and comms isn't the best from what ive heard, thus my decision to study at monash. rmit also has a good course too, i think this is something you should also decide at open days in august.

        • Haven't been on here for a while so in summary: the 2 weeks of 3 weeks of living here before uni started were scholarship program orientation (it's got development activities as well as financial support) then a week of accommodation orientation and then official o week. My scholarship program has a small but close cohort, there's been some interpeople drama but I haven't been involved in any of it and everyone is still really nice to each other.
I started drinking and learnt the hard way how much being hungover can suck lol.
All the activities I've gone to have been pretty fun though.
O week was kind of boring the first half but the second half was fun because that's when our student union was running stuff so there were more clubs and freebies. I joined a fair few (arts society, psychology society, dancesports (I'm starting ballroom lessons lol), vegan society (I'm not vegan but my dad and best friend are), bubble tea society, pirates, friends of unnatural llamas, chocolate society and consistently amazing kitchen endeavours (or CAKE). Plus I'm going to go to some of the student union queer department events (already went to an ace one and it was chill).

People at uni are really nice but it's easy to feel stuck in the same few conversations (what's your name, major, where are you from) so I forget a lot of names.
I've had 3 lectures so far (food for a healthy planet, understanding society and history & philosophy of science) and so far HPS is my favourite but they're all interesting. Tommorow I have a lecture for my final subject (sex, gender and culture).
I genuinely love my time table because I'm not in a single day before 10 am and I'm in every day (not everyone's thing but personally I like having the routine of something daily). Plus my schedule is quiet enough I've been able to fit in my clubs/extra curriculurs so far.

Overall I love it up here, I know it'll start getting more stressful and obviously some bits are hard (fitting in, making proper friends and stuff) but overall I'm happy where I am

          • It's official. Rey is a Melbourne resident with roomates that are absolutely awesome. My new room is cute with pretty decent storage for uni accommodation and the view is spectacular.
Still can't believe I'm here tbh

            Good evening, fellow passenger (lol).

Thank you so much for linking your resource!!! But omg is there actually biofuels in bio? We're learning about it in chem, and we have to compare and contrast between bioethanol/biodiesel/biogas with the fossil fuels.

Last year was probably the most confusing and overwhelming time of my life. Methods was abhorrent, and I would not like to experience high school maths again. The teacher just showed us an example question, and left ourselves to our own devices. (Edit: and then I got sick every other month)

I haven't really put any time towards Art yet, but I really need to practise writing for the exam!! I'm actually concentrating on photography (black and white film) for the AOS (and maybe the rest of the year), so I've researched three photographers (Man Ray, Sally Mann, and Liu Zheng)

Thank you! JLPT is a reading and listening test, and it has five different levels; N1 is the hardest. It's said to be around near-native level, but I don't know if I've felt any improvement in my day-to-day Japanesing

Today was DREADFUL. First, my closest friends won't be going to Camp; second, my Chromebook charger caught fire and almost burnt down the house. It's the heatwave, I swear.

Good luck to you, too. Rooting for you!

          • I read Trevor Noah over the holidays and we had a quiz on it the first day back :/ Also, Unit 4 text?!?!?! I don't think I have processed that school doesn't last forever.

            • Otherwise, The Expat's Guide to Year 12

              hi, I'm caramel!

I thought about starting this journal whilst taking a shower, so I have hardly any idea of what I'm doing 🙂

I was born in the US, but one of my parents are Australian. I only finished Prep before moving over to the US, and I came back after I finished Year 9 in America. So, I do have some knowledge about how uni applications work in America (unfortunately :/).

High school in Australia was like a whirlwind; suddenly I had to learn new terms like 'SAC', 'study score' and 'ATAR', but I've got the hang of it now. To be honest, Year 9 in America was also quite the whirlwind. (Lunch was optional???)

              Subjects

English, Art Creative Practice, Biology, Chemistry, and Japanese SL

              • Year 11: Methods (31)

              Year 11

... was terrible. Shhhh... let's not talk about it 🙂

              Starting the year

I've already had quite a few positives this year. Specifically, I passed the N1 Level of the JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test)! Ahhh I'm so happy!!! 🎆 🎉

On the other hand, I don't know what to do with my certificate. It'll be wall decor for now, but I want to work in a Japan-related job in the future. I'm interested in studying Japanese (interested in the University of Melbourne-TUFS dual degree), but my dad thinks I should give the UCAT a go. I am interested in Medicine, but now that I've passed a test that's as hard as JLPT, I feel as though Japanese is a much better option for me esp. for my mental health and sanity.

About the dual degree, I don't think many people who study Japanese at Unimelb can get it, and the person who I asked at last year's open day wasn't sure either, so I'm a bit confuddled here.

For my study scores, I want to get as high as I can. Hopefully, I can get a 50 in Biology and Japanese, and maybe a high 30s to low 40s for English. Chemistry and Art: we'll see how that goes.

CHERVKAL whalitc is a BORING read, but you’re right— it is super easy to analyse. best of luck for this year everyone!!

              • Don't listen to the WHALITC hate. Great text, and easy to analyse.

                • well hi! i’m dani, better known as FH on atarnotes. i am a class of 2024 graduate with an 86.70 atar, and am starting university next year!!

i’ll be studying a bachelor of arts at monash university, majoring in journalism!! that was my first preference uni, so i’m glad i got that offer yesterday.

                  i aspire to become an investigative journalist, because that specific field of journalism seems very engaging and has so much depth. i already had to choose my units for next year, as that confirmed my enrolment at monash, and i chose the following;

                  semester 1:

                  • ATS1071 political theory in a changing world: concepts, issues and debates
                  • ATS1089 fundamentals in journalism
                  • ATS1314 introduction to international human rights
                  • ATS1421 understanding crime

                  semester 2:

                  • ATS1090 practice of journalism
                  • ATS1315 human rights and social justice
                  • ATS1423 criminal justice in practice
                  • ATS1945 issues in australian politics and government

it’s quite a diverse range of units, but i did quite a bit of looking into each unit to make sure they’d be suitable for journalism.

feel free to check out my year 12 journal here, and i cannot wait to update everything in this journal (hopefully life doesn’t get too busy and i forget and neglect the journal)

                • Update: Im my school's dux, I'm going to be in the newspaper, had Melbourne uni call and I have been offered the narrm scholarship.
I've cried a lot today and had to do a few calls so I'm overwhelmed like it's good but I can no longer emote properly and didn't even smile when telling my mum about the scholarship.
Anyways it's been good but a lot.
Hope everyone else is doing well

                  • Wow guys its been ages since I was online.
                    Final results are out!!!

                    Atar: 96.05

                    Study scores (raw):
                    Business management: 38
                    English: 39
                    Psychology: 41
                    Hospitality: 45
                    HES aggregate: 4.0

I am so happy considering I spent a considerable chunk of the year thinking I may fail (anxiety... Yipee) but that was clearly delusional of me so yay.
But I should have enough for guaranteed entry into Melbourne uni which is what I wanted and I got above a 90 which was always my personal goal.

A bit disappointed at business cause I was hoping to get at least a 40 but pleasantly surprised by english as my exam was pretty average.

In other news I have done my last con of the year (Oz Xmas edition) where I did my first ever body paint with a homemade cosplay I sewed myself with frost giant Loki, aka one of my dream cosplays from when I started a few years ago so I'm so happy. Plus I did a payed photoshoot with a photographer I like and it was incredible.

I hope everyone is happy with their results or can at least relax knowing it's over.

                    • frog_of_spades I'd definitely reccomend a study group because it kind of holds you more accountable than by yourself at home but I also just do not have a good home environment for studying.
For the Hansen, while they do look at finances and stuff, what they really are looking at is who you are as a person, so like final round it's pretty much just interviews where they ask you questions to figure out what kind of person you are and how that will fit best into the program. They're just looking for you to be your genuine self as much as possible, and they're all very nice so don't stress if you get nervous for interviews or anything because they were all lovely people.
I wish you the best of luck!

                      • 12 days later and i’m still unwell… i have bronchitis i have not stopped coughing it is crazy. the only thing i have done since school has finished was formal on friday night, which was somewhat fun. i went with my new group of friends who are amazingly fun and we went on the dance floor for a bit, but the music was so horrible i barely knew any of it 😭. they had a photo booth so we did that and the food was mid, but it was a nice end to the high school experience.

i have 99 hours of driving, but i doubt i will reach 120 by my birthday which is in TEN days. probably won’t be doing much because i don’t like birthdays.

                        hope everyone is well 🙂

edit: i am also beginning to write a novel with all this spare time i have.

                        • frog_of_spades best of luck, k! it’s great that you feel ready for year 12, and that you have study methods sorted that work for you— that honestly places you in a good position.

for general 3/4, i’d say go for it. it’s quite easy content wise, however it’s easier to make silly mistakes which can impact your score. and you are right in saying units 1/2 doesn’t matter much.

and thank you for following my journal, i cant wait to read yours as you update!
