I'm so cooked. I had three tests (Maths, English and Psychology) back to back yesterday, and I had another Math test today. We did the tech active component of the test today, and literally as soon as I opened the page I let out the biggest sigh I've ever sighed. I'm blaming the fact that it's term 4 ๐Ÿ˜’

Let me go on a rant really quickly, but my teacher literally is like the worst. You know when you have teachers, and they're a good person, just not a good teacher? Yea, my math teacher is that type of person. He would make a great wellbeing teacher. Literally on Tuesday, which is the day before the tech free component of the test (UGH), he gave us like a practice test to do on our own, and he said that he would upload the answers to that practice test on Wednesday morning. Guess what, he uploaded the answers THIS MORNING. UGH. Like, I tried checking my answers through ChatGPT, but god knows how reliable it really is. My teacher's problem is that he would spend like 2-3 classes learning a new skill, but give us no extra work to practice this skill. And since I'm in the "advanced" Maths class, the textbooks we bought don't cover what we are learning right now. I thought maybe the Year 11 methods textbooks might have some questions I can work on, but they're too advanced for me.

It literally sucks because he's in charge of our school's production next year, and he's prioritising that over his Maths class, like, he doesn't take us seriously enough I think. Like in the beginning of the year, he was some sort of like coordinator that assigns CRTs to classes, and that took a lot of time from him, and he got himself out of that position like in term 3. He said he can give us more time of day, but no, he's literally still, potentially more distracted than he was in the beginning of the year.

Anyways, I have another practice exam I'm doing for food studies (elective) on Monday. I have so much things I have to study for I'm gonna cry ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ And I'm attending a friend's party tomorrow, so wish me luck!

  • Hey! I don't know how to start this out. I'm currently in Yr 10, Yr 11 next year (2025). I'm moving schools next year, and I'm kind of nervous. I moved from a country overseas just a year ago, and I'm already moving to another school (AHHH). The idea of starting all over again terrifies me. I already had to start over last year, and I have to do it all over again?? Ugh. The reason why I'm moving schools in the first place is because I got into a selective school (yay!). And my current school sucks balls, so yea. All my friends got their subjects for next year, so I thought it would be a good-ish time to start this journal. Exams are in week five and six, and I have 7 exams I have to attend (I want to jump!). I'm currently doing Chemistry 1&2, and I'm getting 70-80 percent. I think I'm like in the top 7 in my class? Anyways, these are the subjects I'm doing next year:

    • Chemistry 3&4
    • Methods 1&2
    • Specialist 1&2
    • Physics 1&2
    • Extended Investigations 3&4
    • EAL 1&2 (not confirmed yet)

Call me delusional, but currently I'm trying to aim or an ATAR of 95+๐Ÿ˜€. I want to study engineering at Melb Uni, and lowkey I wanna try and get a scholarship. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I did a lot of research, and so far all the websites say that if I work hard enough it's possible.

If you want to know anything about me, I love Tyler the Creator (CHROMAKOPIA DROP ON THE 28TH). I also like reading. Recently I finished The Institute by Stephen King, I highly recommend it praying hands emoji. Currently in a reading slump, so I would love any book reccs of any genre!

I started this journal because I love to yap about my future plans, but I feel bad for my friends who have to listen to my relentless yapping about ATARs and study scores. So yea, that's all from me. Stay safe out there!

    • HIIII EXCIITTTINGGG UPDATEEEEE!!

we got our ext 1 marks back and i got an A+ (over 90%)!!! ive been asking around (ext 1 only has one class in our school) and i think i might've gotten 1st!! honestly im so shocked, my heart was beating really hard when the papers were handed back and in my previous posts i was literally hoping for at least a B, i'm so grateful for my mark and glad the effort paid off!!

studying for that exam (comparative essay) was really difficult since i had lots of family events going on, so i had to cram everything in within the week it was happening. that being said, i enjoyed researching it and am super happy!!

anyways, just wanted to let you guys know the news! bye bye ๐Ÿ™‚

      • hi everyone!! small update, turns out my A- mark for eng task 2 was actually equal second out of the whole advanced cohort. which is nice to know, considering i was beating myself up over my task 1 mark. anyways, here's my progress so far for prelim studying (the exams are in a month ish):

        1. biology: kind of behind on notes?? we are still gonna take a few weeks to finish our last module 4, before doing another few weeks of just revision. i've only just started my module 4 notes, but so far not too much content so hopefully i can motivate myself. also im freaking out on how im gonna memorise everything, next year i for sure need to be revising content regularly!!
        2. korean beg: so far caught up on notes, not my biggest worry atp!
        3. visual arts: also not worried about it right now, but we still have our task 2 assessment due soon (very delayed, i know). i'm thinking of redoing my prac work but idk.
        4. maths adv: UGH it genuinely makes me so bored and annoyed, but ive seen the content in standard math and it is so easy that i'm considering not dropping?? its like i feel like i have the potential to do well in adv, but my passion is at 0 so actually maybe i'll just drop. i feel like the relief and freedom to focus on other subjects would be very rewarding.
        5. english adv: not really prepared? haven't really compiled my quotes yet. i've done some basic contextual research, i'm for sure gonna fall behind but i'm not bothered to do anything abt it!!!!!
        6. english ext also slightly behind, but i think i'll be able to catch up by the end of this week. i haven't started my contextual research, and i'm gonna try and watch the films i need for my project by the end of next week!

i'll need to revise and study extra hard for bio and math, im hoping for the best by the end of the term!! can't wait for the total reset in syllabus next term.

        • hi guys!! currently we have gotten back our english advanced results, with ext still on the back burner. i managed to get an A-, so i've redeemed myself from term 1!

currently ive been focused on my extension independent project and making biology notes. ive also told myself to work more on math regularly day by day, but i honestly have no passion for it and am seriously considering dropping down because of this.

ive been struggling with procrastination as well, i get out of bed late on the weekends and go out a lot so my time management is pretty bad ๐Ÿ˜ญ ๐Ÿ˜ญ im trying to take smaller baby steps and do at least one thing a day rather than not do anything at all, but its not really working haha...

also considering not doing ext 2 (not that i think i would be recommended anyway), i feel like i would find visual arts more enjoyable than doing ext 2, but i would try my hardest if i were given the opportunity. i have no idea what i would do for the major works for either one, and if i keep art im kind of worried about having only 11 units (how would that calculate??).

anyways, anxiously waiting for ext 1 marks!! 3 A's and 1 C for this term, so quite balanced. good luck for everyones trials as well ๐Ÿ™‚

        • hello everyone!! ive been seeing a lot of vce journals and thought documenting my hsc journey might be helpful/motivating for me. it is currently the beginning of term 3 right now, so yr 11 prelim exams are soon (end of the term) and then its off to yr 12 next term!

          debrief on subjects:

          1. biology: really enjoyable, my teacher is very engaging and good at explaining so i've been enjoying all the content so far. i've been keeping up with notes, and for my assessments so far i've gotten a B+ and A-!
          2. korean beg: my favourite subject, i'm really passionate and managed to get (basically) full marks for both assessments! i enjoy making notes for it as well, even though it is starting to get harder.
          3. visual arts: kind of chose this because i didn't know what else to choose, its not so bad and ive been in the A range, im not that skilled at pracs though but i enjoy the theory. would drop in yr 12 if i could.
          4. maths advanced: really difficult and disappointing in results. i managed to get an A- last term but barely passed this term (52%). this was pretty humbling as its the lowest mark i've ever gotten in all of HS. a lot of people started to drop down to standard after the 2nd assessment and i'm also considering it. for now though, i think i'm going to try my hardest in prelims and see how i go -- if i don't achieve a B+ or higher i'll probably drop.
          5. english advanced: haven't gotten term 2 results yet (will update later!!). i think this term i did better than last term (a narrative, which i scored a B- on, which i know wasn't bad at all but was still really disappointing as i used to get A's in my past year narratives). it is an okay subject, i'm confused on how i can prep for shakespeare.
          6. english ext 1: a LOT more work than i expected. i never realised how independent study heavy it is, but the content we do is quite interesting. got away with a B in the 1st term, and i hope it's the same for term 2 (haven't gotten the results and don't think i did too well). i'm excited for this term's assesment, as its an independent project, with our own choice of focus texts!

my other 1 unit is a non-atar unit, which is well, a bludge. i originally picked it thinking i would be able to get into ext 2 in yr 10 (foolish, i know), but it's not looking so great so far compared to the other students in my ext class.

i'm quite grateful for my marks so far, just only a bit disappointed with them as ive gotten accustomed to the high standard i used to perform at in previous years. the transition was harsher than expected, and im scared im reaching burnout, but i hope i will do well for finals!!

          goals:
atar: i'm hoping for an atar with 90+! i calculated my atar for each term with the matrix calculator and it went from 89 in term 1 to 81 in term 2... it's still good enough for the courses i'd like to do which require 80+ but for my own personal standards i'd like to reach a little higher lol.

career: i'm hoping to get a bachelor in design computing!! (if anyone does this rn please lmk how its been lol) i recently stumbled upon it and have fell in love with its prospects -- i used to do graphic design as an elective before yr 11 and loved every bit of it. this bachelor has coding, graphic design, and teaches photoshop, illustrator, indesign, ux design, etc. i find it would be really fun to learn or at least provide valuable skills for the future!!

i previously considered project management or dermatology because i wasn't sure of what i wanted to do, but they're probably second options for now!! (project management as i enjoy organisational roles, and dermatology as i'd love to help others with acne and know there's only a few spots rn... booking one can leave u on the waitlist for a year my mum says...)

i will hopefully update this more when i make progress in exam prep/get results back for term 2!! if anyone has advice about my math debacle, ext1 and ext2 english, or any general exam prep for prelims, it'd be greatly appreciated!!

        • I organise all my subjects in the same way. Each subject has a folder with an assigned colour (e.g. english is blue and psych is green) which correlates to the colours on the schedule I made and the stickynotes I keep with my classwork on my laptop.
I have a printout of the study design at the front of my binder with 2 notebooks, one for notes and one for work. I also have plastic pockets at the back for any handouts and I keep one plastic pocket per AoS to keep everything from the same topic together.

        • nuclei Thank you!!!
Additionally, I was wondering what you are allowed in the exams. Do they provide working out paper??

          • IDON'TGIVEUP that kinda depends on how smart u r now, if you aren't like rlly smart already I would say its nearly impossible to get into selective from 30 days of preparation, because it is significantly harder and competitive than yr9. Jmss however, from what I have heard, is fairly easy and not much studying is needed, so you def hv a chance for jmss

          • TT556

For SR it will be really similar to the ICAS exams and mostly everything from the year 9 curriculum, according to what I have heard.

            • nuclei If you do use it, don't worry too much about the mark it gives (rare to get 80%+) and focus on the feedback unless it's telling you to go in more detail.

              Oh OK...

            • Plus if anyone can share their experience (like how hard or easy exam was) it would be great.

For the most part, I worked out of my school textbooks. My school uses Pearson for science and Cambridge for maths (I also purchased an Oxford maths textbook) so I mainly did the questions from those books. I focused on science more since I was doing advanced work for math in class anyway and I ended up covering the entire science book in about two months. Over my three months of preparation, I basically studied at any spare moment. I started with covering content from my textbooks, then as the date of the exam neared I began doing practice exams. I didn't really practice writing since I felt pretty confident in my writing abilities but in the last two weeks or so I did ask ChatGPT for prompts and have my writing marked by it. Overall, I wouldn't recommend my study method as it was very rushed. I relied heavily on prior foundation knowledge and the fact that I was scoring well in both subjects but also had to sacrifice a lot of my social life as I studied for the exam and tried to join activities to put on my CV.

              Thanks for this nuclei

              • nuclei Previously, you recommended me the Henderson exams for N.R., but are there any good books for this... If anyone knows any, please let me know.

                Thank you

Thank you so much for your time and help!
For Maths I have a year 9 Oxford math book so I'll focus mostly on that. And for science I'll use AI. I'll also play sudoku and see if it helps!

                • Hi, I am also sitting the exam for JMSS for 2025 and just read these tips and they are actually really good, so Thank You! Anyways, I was wondering about the interview part of the process and whether I could prepare for them in some way. By that I mean joining more clubs/trying to increase my achievement list (tbh I don't really have as much). I just wanted to know if there are things I should participate in that will increase my chances and some examples of achievemnts I should be having.
                  Thanks for your time!

                    • Dandenong Veterinary
                    • Hospital Work Experience
                    • DPV Health Work Experience
                    • Future Doctors Australia Work Experience Program (Really good one)
                    • Northern Health (I'm not sure if they still do it after Covid)
                    • Royal Melbourne Hospital work experience
                    • Royal Women's Hospital work experience

These were the ones I could find. Hope it helps ๐Ÿ™‚

                    • Hi,
I've just completed bio this year and obtained a study score of 45. I am telling you what I personally did; this may not be good advice.

Question 1: I personally did not use my notes and I resorted to using cue cards. But, I took information from a textbook (edrolo) and added additional information I obtained from my teacher (nelson textbook). This is so I would have a strong foundation of information, as in some cases nelson would miss out on information, vice versa.

Question 2: I have always incorporated practice questions into my study. I recommend from day 1 spoon feeding yourself exam questions (this is super underrated). Whilst you may be worried about wasting exam questions, you likely will not remember these questions you picked (I didn't), and it is better to build a foundation on how to structure responses earlier rather than later. I only started practice exams two months post-exam.

Question 3: You must always stay ahead of content if you are planning to score 45+. I recommend at least 2 chapters ahead, but over the summer holidays I completed the whole of unit 3 and was very comfortable with the content (I felt that this was a bit extreme).

Question 4: For pre-sac study I started revising 2 weeks before the actual sac. I did practice exam questions and cue cards. For pre-exam, I revised all my cue cards 3 months pre-exam and stopped using cue cards 2 months pre-exam. For the remainder of the time, I did practice exams from vcaa and other company exams; try to complete between 25-40 exams before the actual exam. For a 45+ you should only be loosing a minimum of 10 marks per exam (this is the amount of marks I lost on the actual exams; however, I really only lost 0-6 marks on average per exam, so try to aim for less than 10).

Question 5: I personally found evolution the hardest topic, though others say it is the easiest. It is very divisive as parts of it are purely common sense and cannot be taught. But, generally, the hardest topics are considered to be attenuation for the trp operon, insulin recombination and transformation, and possibly CRISPR. However, the aforementioned topics, excluding evolution, are all memorisation based, so once you memorise these processes (which are very long), you'll be sweet.

Question 6: I cannot emphasise this enough and not enough people know about this, but you MUST use the biology FAQ document. It ensures that you do not learn content that you do not need for the exam, sacs are different. This saves so much time and is arguably more important than using the study design.
I know this may sound contradictory to the aforementioned point, but extend yourself beyond what VCAA requires. Now, whilst the content you are learning may not appear on the exam, it further fortifies your understanding on how different concepts interlink with each other, strengthening this basis will only make you score higher. On a year-to-year basis, the difficulty of the exams fluctuates (for example, this years bio exam was extremely difficult), you want to prime yourself so you can adapt if VCAA decide to pump out another hard exam.

                      Hope this helps!

                      • Hey ATARnoters. This is just going to be a small bloggish thing I do in my free times cause why not. A quick intro into me. My subjects this year (2024) are

                        • 1/2 Chem
                        • 1/2 Methods
                        • 1/2 History
                        • 1/2 Bio
                        • Other various Year 10 classes

Iโ€™m sorta excited to do them but also itโ€™s abit freaky! Iโ€™m more than happy to answer any questions or anything of that sort!
